Default Question for Vegans

Do you consider synthetic food ingredients vegan? For example Acesulfame K.

"Acesulfame K an artificial sweetener derived from acetoacetic acid. Acetoacetic acids are produced from the oxidization of alcohol, which is produced from the fermentation of grain, a plant source."

But, if its made in a lab, through chemical reactions, is it still vegan?

What about genetically modified foods?

Absolutely yes, in both cases. I also consider salt to be vegan. Vegan does not, to me, imply a plant source; rather, it's the lack of an animal source, so both plants and minerals are vegan.

There are arguments against synthetic foods, and against genetically modified ones, but they aren't automatically non-vegan.

I would say it's still vegan according to the definition of that term. Still, many vegans are such as much for the health aspects as for animals and so I would imagine would avoid things like this as well. I don't personally like ingesting chemicals that much because I think they are responsible for many of our current health problems. As for gm foods, I just get creeped out by them. I feel it will be a while before we can understand the full ramifications of messing with our food in these ways. But that's just me.

So, vegan = yes. Good food choice = no/possibly not.

I wonder how everyone else sees this?

Synthetic foods from plants origin are safe for vegans.

If you buy a food and in it, you find an ingredient from animal origin then it is not recommend for vegetarians although there are some ingredients manufactured artificially which have animal origins though.
