Default How does my friend do this stuff ?

The other day I was talking to my friend and he told me that he hasn’t slept for three days and he is not sleeping for another day.

How do people do this? I know he is telling the truth because he does things like this but how? If I did that I would walk around like a drunk and my face would look like Ide been squeezing H in the veins.

However when he told me this he had enough energy to go on and on about videogames and had more life in him then I did. He doesn't drink energy drinks but I think he drinks Cola sometimes. So how does he do this does anybody know?

He just stays awake! Three days isn't too hard like it was previously said, but as soon as he falls asleep, he'll be out like a light for hours upon hours.

I've had to do this at search and rescue missions, and stay awake fine (probably due to adrenaline). But I can't see anyone doing that willingly. It's not healthy.

Why do you care? If you really HAVE TO and WANT TO you probably could to.

Skipping one night of sleep just requires that you have something to do that's more interesting than sleep. Once you've made it past your circadian rhythm low, and it starts to pick back up again (around 8am), which keeps your alertness high enough to stay awake until your circadian rhythm takes another plunge (in the afternoon or the following night). When I did this in high school, I could only skip one night before my body demanded sleep.

3 days in a row is very excessive. I wouldn't suppose that he's telling the truth. There's a certain cult-like appeal to defeating the need to sleep. It's fun to brag over skipping nights of sleep, so many people keep that afternoon crash-nap they took a secret.

Lastly, I bet genetics plays a large role in your ability to forego sleep.

It'd take around 10 days before there's any actual permanent damage from lack of sleep...

I'd guess he must be relying on caffeine to a certain extent, like the cola drinks you mentioned, possibly coffee or tea as well. If he's not using ANYTHING to stay awake, I'd be very surprised.

In my view, this sounds like a misguided personal development attempt. If he was my friend, I'd suggest that he find some more productive use for all the energy he's putting into this.

My friends and I used to do long sleep-deprivation D&D games every summer. We'd start Monday around 8-10am, and game until Thursday around noon. Occasionally, one of us would crash on wed or thr, but waking up in an empty cow stall in the barn (uncleaned, of course) would generally make sure that you wouldn't do it again for a while.
Of course, now that e-coli is a well known problem, we likely wouldn't take that route today.
We used to do that every week during the summer for 4 years in a row.

Does the person in question have bipolar disorder?

This is unlikely, but I am curious. Staying up for days at a time with tons of energy and then crashing into sleeping/depression is a very common symptom of that disease.

It's more likely that the person is doing something like Doku describes.
