| Hi everyone this is just something that I’ve been pondering. My mom, about two years ago, had to get glasses so she could drive. She doesn't wear them much now, don't know why. She got them at 38 so does this mean that I will probably have to get them at that age? I do a lot of starring at a computer screen and a TV. Also I used to stare at the TV for up to 8 hours at a time. So what do you think? By the way I got an eye test like a year ago and the doctor said my eyes are "fine". It wasn't much of a test though. |

Dennis how much of a test do you need? and what's the big deal about wearing glasses. I'm told they are quite cool with young people, some even wear clear lenses! Lighten up and think Harry Potter. | Dennis08~ I suppose that if you REALLY believe that you are going to wear glasses by the time you are 38, even though your eye test was fine, you probably will.....unless you believe your eye DR.Then in that case......well you won't.It really just depends on you....right?JMO |

| All of us, over time, lose our ability to accomodate with our lenses (the lens becomes hard, and the muscle cannot expand/contract it in order to change the focal point of the light entering the eye). So yes, eventually you will have to have glasses/contacts/LASIK (and at this age, LASIK is fine, but as you get older, you'll also have to have reading glasses because your lenses won't accomodate). Some elderly don't need them - they either got lucky and have a slow deterioration (a healthy diet promotes eye health over time, because they are very nonvascular, so it takes a LONG time), or they're in denial. There's little you can do, you can't 'will' it one way or another, and it is a lifestyle over forty years that'll delay your deterioration/loss of accomodation. But you can accept it as something that will eventually come. I had horrible vision, I opted for LASIK about six months ago, changed me entirely. No glasses or anything until I'm in my fifties and that'll be for reading glasses. My mom got LASIK, and uses reading glasses, but her distance vision is perfect. |

| I used to wear glasses and I hated it, now I got contacts. If anyone hates wearing glasses and contacts, I recommend getting Paragon CRT contacts. These kinds of contacts you wear during the night and they actually shape your eye so it refracts light better. I've been using them for almost two years and now I have perfect vision - and I don't have to wear anything during the day! You can even skip wearing them a night and still see ok as long as you don't do it all the time.

| Losing your good eyesight is not necessarily a normal occurrence with aging. Any eye doctor will tell you that macular degeneration can be slowed and/or prevented by eating a minimum of 9 or 10 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. |

| I see plenty of older folks around who don't wear glasses. It's not a given that everyone will have to wear them. Even if you do need them, it's not the end of the world. I have a pair mostly for use with the computer. My eyes are nearly 20/20, but not completely, so they take away some of the strain from the monitor. Mine also have magnetically-attached sunglasses, which is very handy. Personally I don't mind wearing them at all. Having a stylish frame and lightweight lenses can make a big difference in that regard. A full eye exam should include the standard eye chart test, a glaucoma check, which is often done with a machine that blows a puff of air at your eyeball, and an exam of the retina. The retina exam commonly includes having your pupils dilated, which makes it hard to see and makes you VERY sensitive to light, but some doctors use a special camera to snap a picture of the retina without any dilation. The only after effect is a ghost effect from the camera flash that lasts about 5 minutes.

| What is your monitor's refresh rate? Having light flashing at you 60 or so times a second can cause eye strain. Always set it as high as possible, the default values usually aren't optimal.

I did just find out that my monitor can support 100 Hz, though (it was previously at 85).

| I say yeah, there's a good chance you'll have to get glasses later in life. But you never know, you might never have to get any due to receiving great genetics and living a healthy life.

| Don't assume that glasses are a foregone conclusion. I've worn glasses for 30 yrs and am no finally getting RID of them with exercises for the eyes. Instead of using the crutch of glasses, continue to work your eyes and you may never need them. My eyes are now documented as getting BETTER and not worse. If you do ever get glasses, only wear them when you have to. Stephen The Internet Largest Free Give Away Ever - **************************** |
