Default Reactions to kombucha?

A coworker of mine really likes kombucha, so yesterday I figured I'd try it. It tasted great, kind of like sparkling cider, and it seemed to really calm down my stomach, which had been gurgling and feeling rather uncomfortable all week. But inexplicably, before lunch, I got really light-headed and dizzy -- not so much that I couldn't function, but it was really distracting, and it lasted for almost 6 hours.

Could that have been a reaction to the kombucha, or something else? I wasn't dehydrated (I drank about 32 oz of water already that day) and I wasn't starving (I had a normal breakfast, normal lunch, and as far as junk food, just a handful of dark chocolate almonds). And the kombucha was from the store, not a possibly contaminated home brew.

For those of you who have tried or currently drink kombucha, what have your experiences been?

Hi Elaine.

I'm a big fan of GT Dave's Kombucha, which I buy at Whole Foods. I have a similar reaction to yours -- makes me feel great, then relaxed and a little spacey. I attribute this to the fact that it's a fermented drink, and probably has a small amount of alcohol in it. Some of the brands even mention this on the label, I think. It would be tough to get drunk on kombucha, though, even if you're a lightweight like me!

Well, I had two more kombucha drinks this weekend, and I didn't have the dizziness/lightheadedness problem again! Though the relaxed/spacey thing might have subtly applied.

Good stuff!

I have felt relaxed after drinking it, but I've never felt distracted by it. GT is up to .05% alcohol, so you would need to drink about six 16 ounce bottles to be equivalent to a typical 3.2% beer.

The funny thing is that I have the same initial reaction to my first few sips of kombucha as I do to alchohol (I get this warm sensation). Even though it certainly doesn't affect me like a margarita!
