Default Best Idea Ever: Vegan Healthcare

Would it be legal to start an insurance company that only offered insurance to vegans? I think there is enough evidence showing that veganism is a healthier lifestyle.. and people would flip when they saw the lower rates.

LOL Maybe you' definately need to implement some sort of testing mechanism to ensure they are vegan. Veganism is healthy if done right. if not watch out!

I think it would be a great idea. I wonder how you could know if people were vegan? I haven't signed up for healthcare in a while...I know they ask about smoking and stuff, but how do they really know?

I'm no expert, but I would be VERY surprised if it was legal to deny coverage to people based on their diet. You could certainly promote a vegan lifestyle and make that your company's focus, but I expect you'd get into a lot of legal trouble if you required veganism.

I think you're probably right.

I don't think insurance companies can really deny coverage, even to smokers, they just jack up the rates.

Correct, they jack the rates.

The insurance industry is heavily controlled by state law and the rules vary state to state (I'm taking in the USA). What might be legal in one state is not in another.

I thought about this once. I think my idea went something like this. Vegan = good rates, then like a million a year if you kill for food..

I found that idea very entertaining. I think too focus should be preventive care instead of lets wait until you are sick idea america seems to have.

Maybe there could be a private organization that just gave you money on the rare occasion that you needed a doctor. They could have the 'B12 plan' and the 'D plan'. Or, on rare occasions, the 'Zinc plan', which would be really cheap.

On the other hands, nuts and seeds plan would be the costliest for the low fat vegans who choose to shun fats in nuts.

Quote:
Many people were scared away from nuts during the low-fat craze of the last few decades, but now nuts are making a comeback. Nuts are excellent sources of protein, minerals, "good" monounsaturated fats and other nutrients, and they're good for the heart.

A study conducted by Loma Linda University in California that involved 31,000 Seventh Day Adventists found that eating nuts lowered the risk of heart disease and helped participants to keep their weight down. Other large-scale studies, including the Physician's Health Study, the Iowa Women's Heath Study and the Harvard Nurses Health Study, also found that eating nuts lowered heart disease risk. Other studies have shown that nuts help lower bad "LDL" cholesterol.
