A GROWING MIND is on a distinguished road
Default Bad sleeping and eating habits

Ok I guess I will start with my sleeping problem. I usually go to sleep around 2:00 or 2:30 in the morning and wake up around 11:00 or so. Then I go downstairs and have something to eat (sometimes) Then I go back upstairs and go back to sleep for another 3 - 5 hours. So sometimes I get around 14 hours asleep everyday. Now for my eating, some days I will only eat like once, some days I will eat like 3 or 4 times, other days I wont eat at all. A lot of the time when I have a hard time eating its because nothing sounds good and I cant bring myself to eat something, and other times when I put something in my mouth I start to feel sick. Anyway I was hoping you guys would have some advice to beat these bad habits, or some reading material or anything of the sort. Any help is appreciated, Thanks.

I suggest reading Steve's How To Become An Early Riser article - not necessarily to become a really early riser, but to form the habit of getting up at the same time by practicing getting out of bed, etc. It's much easier to get the appropriate amount of sleep per day when your body knows it will be getting up at time X.

Hope that helps with the sleeping.

As for eating, I can only say: eat veggies! And fruits, too.

I support the "wake up at a fixed time" concept, it really worked for me. For breakfast I recommend eating one or two pieces of fruit, that (in my case) wakes me up properly.

For the rest, try different diets, to find one that you're comfortable with, people on this forum seem to lean more towards veganism, and vegatarianism, but figure this out for yourself, nobody is exactly the same!

Good luck!

A full-time job would solve your "sleeping problem"

But seriously, do you work/study/else?

I'd also like to counsel that you're displaying classic symptoms of depression. Seriously, if you haven't done some research as to whether that is a possibility, I encourage you to start there. Other symptoms:

Depressed mood.
Inability to enjoy activities.
Problems concentrating.
Changes in eating habits or appetite.
Weight gain or weight loss.
Changes in sleeping habits.
Difficulty going to work or taking care of your daily responsibilities because of a lack of energy.
Feelings of guilt and hopelessness; wondering if life is worth living (common).
Slowed thoughts and speech.
Preoccupation with thoughts of death or suicide.
Complaints that have no physical cause (somatic complaints) such as headache and stomachache.

You sound exactly like me a few months ago, and I am definitely depressed. I was moreso back then, however.

If you have the option, I'd see a psychologist and get a full-time job right away. You'll be cured in no time.

Well first, it is obvious that you are getting wayy too much sleep. As recommended by others, make yourself get up at a cetain time EVERYDAY. Maybe make it 9 or 10 in the morning -- nothing drastic like when the sun rises. This will stabilize your sleeping habbits. For your diet, NEVER skip breakfast. It is a vital part of your day because your body has been fasting for 8 hours (or more) and it is important to replenish what was lost during your sleep. Assist your breakfast with a multivitamin and maybe some Essential Fatty Acids. After your breakfast, if you get tired, then step outside, go for a walk and make yourself wake up. The sun always wakes me up and if I ever feel like going back to sleep, I will step outside and I am cured. The sun also has many benefits to counter depression. As for the rest of your day, try to eat every 3 hours -- but don't overindulge. Eat until you are satisfied and make your meals hearty. Also, start exercising more - the walk I mentioned earlier could be a good start. Let us know how things work out for you and don't give in to sleeping all day. You don't want to sleep your precious life away.

As for your sleeping problem it seems it's a matter of simply changing your schedule if it really is a problem for you. If you go to bed late and still get 8 hours like you seem to be it's perhaps not ideal but by beginning a new cycle of going to bed early you will want to get up earlier.

As for the diet, I wrote an extensive article on "why diets don't work" on my site in the health and fitness section, the link is below. The article goes into detail about how your body works, why you should eat more often and how to avoid getting fat but still eating plenty. It also explains why people get fat even though they don't eat much. There is also information on the site about sleeping.

I heard that staying up for 24 hours for one day can "reset" your clock so try that and then sleep at a reasonable time.

exactly....since its holidays now, i sleep at 1-2 am in the morning, wakes up at around 9am...i realise that this causes me to get more breakouts...i believe that sleeping hours are very important and it needs to be constant at all times....sleeping rejuvenates the whole body system...and even controls the hormones of a person!!

Getting a full-time job is certainly going to help, especially if it involves physical activity. Also being outdoors and in the fresh air will help you sleep. When I've been cooped up indoors all day working, the last thing I do each evening is take a long walk or have a swim. Hard work, fresh air and a healthy diet will do wonders!
