Default What foods aren't healthy?

Are mushrooms healthy? I've heard some people say that many are poisionous. Of course, some might be okay for you...

Hah, yes, as far as I know the ones that aren't poisonous are indeed healthy for you.

Depends on the mushroom.

Yes, which is why you should never eat wild mushrooms unless you know exactly what you're doing.

Honestly, asking if mushrooms are good for you is kind of like asking if berries are good for you. It really just depends on the berry. Or the mushroom.

And on a more whimsical note, I've always been intrigued by these:

(That's a Stinkhorn). Unfortunately, they're poisonous. I've also never seen one growing in the wild, sadly.

I read somewhere that there are very low in calories and a good source of iodine.
Of course there are poisonous ones,so I wouldn´t pick them up by myself
I recommend you to buy organic ones.

We sometimes grow our own mushrooms. You can buy kits, which makes it fairly easy to do, or you can really get into fungiculture and make or buy mushroom boxes and do up the compost mix yourself, etc.

Different mushrooms only grow in certain conditions, though, so you need to really learn how to create the right environment for the ones you want to grow, and it can be a bit fiddly. You have to have the right kind of compost or manure for the specific mushroom, and then cultures of the mushroom to get it started.

That being said, I normally just buy the kits and grow white button mushrooms. I'd love to find a kit for Swiss Brown mushrooms, though. I like them better than the white ones (better flavour and texture, IMHO).

Mushrooms are very good for you. They supply a good amount of trace minerals, such as selenium, which helps prevent Alzheimer's. I would assume that wild mushies have more trace minerals and a better profile, but you have to be an experience mycologist to not die from these.
