The most common cause for oily skin is washing it too much. This causes one thing that you mentioned - dry skin. Especially if you are using low-quality chemical soaps, and ESPECIALLY if you are using "acne cream" with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide or however they are spelled. You see, washing skin with harsh soap or hot water tends to remove its natural oils, drying it out. Same thing with hair. In response, your skin over-produces its natural oils to compensate and to moisturize. The result of doing this every day is oily skin. I have been told that eating fatty, greasy fried foods and lots of sugar can make your skin oily. I haven't personally experienced this, but mainly because I stay away from those foods. I doubt that genetics have much to do with that. They maybe affect it 1% and the rest is 80% hygiene and 19% diet. (I made up the percents, of course, but that's about what I've experienced.) |

In my case, it was certainly genetic as my mother had oily skin. But fortunately for me, my own skin has become oily these days compared to my teens and even my 20s. I also avoid oily foods so that might also have something to do with it.

| thanks for the replies. These are helpful. The idea that overwashing will lead to excess oil is odd to me. I've not experienced that, but it makes sense. I change my diet, sometimes eating less fatty foods, but I don't ever recall noticing a difference. The idea of sugar being a contributor is interesting. I've reduced my sugar intake, but I wonder if eliminating as much as possible will make a difference. |
