I don't know why you get discouraged since other people are minding their own business. However, if you feel too self conscious, you may opt to workout at home with some fitness equipment if it's in your budget. The other thing you might want to work on is beyond your fitness, which is why you might feel so self conscious. I shot a video in October which hopefully might help you as I offer a strategy on how to stop worrying about how other people think of you - whether outside, in a gym or anywhere else. It may give you some perspective. You certainly don't want to let any issue like that stop you from your health and fitness goals. |

I was going to also advise maybe trying to workout at home, but I'm curious what is it about others that makes you feel discouraged. Is it that you feel a bit intimidated by people that may have more experience than you? Can you get a workout buddy?

I was wondering the same question as tia. Are self conscious or is it intimidation? If it's self consciousness, then you might be best working out in private. (That's how I get around it myself. If it's intimidation, then it's likely that you are comparing yourself to others. If you're just starting to exercise, then you might feel a little inferior in comparison to others. It worth keeping in mind that they were where you are now. The best approach in that case is to focus on your own standard in exercise, where you are at right now. When you work out, your working out to improve yourself, and not to compete with others. Whether it's self consciousness or intimidation, keep in mind that these are elements that eventually dissipate as you get familiar and as time goes by. One last note; If you want a lasting exercise consistency, then it pays to make sure that your motives for exercise are ones that really motivate you. I suggest you the time to note down what your motives for exercise are and seperate the ones that are fear or insecurity based from the ones that are genuine inspiration based. |

Focus on your results! everyone that goes to the gym, goes for the same reason as you. just grab your music, your workout plan(assuming you write out & plan your workouts) and just do it! the more you do it, the more comfortable you will get.

| Don't give importance to other people because they are no way related YOU, they are OTHERS ( passing clouds). Just think you are perfect, what you doing is the best of all and DO it with full focus and confidence.

I agree with ALG. Its human nature to be mostly preoccupied with one's self over what that person over there is doing and how. I catch myself in moments of irrational self consciousness at times, and when I do, I have this line I tell myself. "The only one who's focus is on you, is your own." It reminds me that any judgement or criticism that I might be fearing, quite often comes from me and not others.(in some way, shape or from, how you think you appear to others is primarily how you have chosen to appear to yourself.)
