Try making it so the overall dish is milder, and when you dish up his, add a little extra cumin and chili, and some pepper flakes or other hot stuff (tobasco would work). You could even throw in some chopped up jalepenos to his. That way you can enjoy a milder chili (which is what I personally prefer) and he can still have it hot.

You could also temper it with some cool yoghurt or something else that goes with chili...sour cream? Maybe a salad of cucumber and tomato with avocado to go on the side, just to give that cool.
