In all honesty, I'd love to, as I say, because I think I look good in long hair (which has been confirmed by women I've known).

It's just such a pain. Smiley reminded me of the wads of hair in the brush. It once also caught fire while I was working on a stove.

I feel sort of clownish in makeup too. I sometimes wonder whether there is an underlying issue with feeling uncomfortable being dressed up in a traditionally feminine way. May be. I think when it really comes down to it though, I just can't be bothered to put makeup on.

RE: Special events - I don't typically wear overly feminine clothing either, and yet, I've thrown on dresses during special events - weddings, my dad's funeral. I sort of feel like it is expected, but don't really want to. *scratches head* May be I'll show up in jeans and a sweat shirt during the next special event.

Trevor: I'm just curious - Now that you have received some criticism on your blog post, how do you feel about the issue now? I don't venture forth into blogs very often, but when I do, the author seems to using the medium mainly as a way of speaking at people rather than as a medium to facilitate communication between author and audience. I find this disappointing. I would really like to hear how our criticism changes the way you think.

I'm not going to lie, I almost have a hair fetish in regards to women--I absolutely love long hair. And, I've been told I look great with it, myself, which is why I grew it out a few years ago. But it's more a pain for me. As a guy, I know well how to be lazy, and I'd rather just not have to worry so much about my hair.
I've had long hair (hips+) for the last 6-7 years (I can't remember exactly when it got down to my hips), and I have done a lot of things with it, but never have I ever had to pull it off the ceiling.

Me too. Also cut it off the vacuum rollers, physically remove it from drains, and in the past mine was long enough that I had to move it out of the way to use the toilet.

BAHAHAHA! In my junior year in highschool I made Junior Dutchess for homecoming (I have NO idea how...I think they ran out of people to take the spot) and my mother hired a lady to do my makeup professionally for the pictures.

I HAVE HAZEL EYES...like straw colored eyes...and the woman put BRIGHT blue eyeshadow all over me, reddish lipstick, red blush. It was AWFUL!!!!!

My mother was very impressed and said it would look good in pictures, though, and threatened my life if I washed it off so I had to wear this hideous clown makeup for one of the most prominent moments of my highschool career. I still can't stand to see the pictures. My dad even drove in from Dallas to escort me and if you had seen the look on his face when he saw me, you would have peed your pants from laughter.

Anyway, I soooo know how this feels. LOL.

I am lucky, that much need for make up I don't need.
I wear mascara every day, to bring my eyes out and Lip gloss to make my pretty lips even pretty "plus they feel better".
I don't feel as though I am hiding.

Personally I don't care whether a woman wears makeup when she goes out, as long as she has healthy self-esteem.

I do have one question, though, for the straight women here: would you consider it impolite if your boyfriend asked you to take off your makeup if you were just hanging out at home together and he wanted to make out with you without your lipstick, etc. smudging off on him?

And lol about the long hair fetish stuff. The reason I wear my hair short is because when it gets longer than like 3", I can't sleep at night because my head and neck feel too hot (even in the New England winter!) and it starts tickling my ears and stuff. How do you people with long hair, especially those of you living in much hotter climes than I do, put up with the heat!?

Also, I think women with short hair are underrated. Pageboy and pixie cut hairstyles are usually made of win, in my opinion.

Right on. Just to touch on that one more time, the traditional concept of masculinity is built in negatives - being manly is about not being a fag and not being a sissy girl (it also has ableist and classist implications under the range of "not being weak, physically and mentally" and "not being a loser", but not so neatly summed up in a single slur). It's exclusionary by definition, of the kind of exclusions that feminists have been working to bring down.

But now that what it means to be gay and what it means to be a woman are being redefined to be more free and inclusive, the definition of masculinity collapses. I do think it's one of the great next tasks of feminists, in particular male feminists, to reclaim masculinity and redefine it in a positive, inclusive manner. One that will allow you to wear skirts and makeup if you feel like it, because why the ♥♥♥♥ not?

I've never ever ever liked that short hair style on women. It's RARE that I'd find one attractive. She'd have to have the total package to pull that off, in my eyes.

I wanted to comment on the post that referred to women at the gym with tons of makeup on - I wear makeup during the day and go to the gym after work. I'm not going to take all of my makeup off specifically to go to the gym; that would be as silly as putting makeup on specifically to go to the gym.

I am a chick that adores makeup, shoes, clothes, etc... I love being feminine. I love expressing and amplifying my femininity. It's good for my soul. Besides, whatever people's motivations for certain behaviors or habits (known or unknown motivations) should not have to be subjected to "right" or "wrong" by other people. That is like telling someone their feelings are right or wrong. Or opinions. We're all entitled to them, but there is no finite "right" or "wrong" answer to anything, really. You may disagree with me here, but hey, that is why opinions are so great!

I'm usually in the gym in the morning or mid day. That's not after work. And, most of these ladies look perfect, and not like they've been working for the last 9 hours. And it's usually a good amount of makeup.

Predilection, yes, but it's not always a requirement.

As rr suggested, you rather have to look at the whole package. Women understand that more often than men, I think, but some men get it, too.

I just wanted to defend myself I suppose - I almost always plan to go to the gym in conjunction with other errands or after work. Would I roll out of bed and go to the gym, come home and get ready for the day? Yup, done it. Generally though, the gym is my last stop. But really, IMHO, it's nobody's place to have to make people feel the need to defend themselves for how they choose to present themselves to the world, at the gym or otherwise. My two cents.

That's fine, but I still don't get the appeal. I especially fail to understand it when I hear certain guys tell middle-aged women to keep their long hair or grow their short hair out to look younger. Long hair usually makes a middle-aged woman look older to me.

And just to clarify, I'm not suggesting that people should or should not feel a certain way, or that I'm superior or anything for feeling the way I do. I just genuinely find it fascinating how much one's tastes and feelings can diverge from (what can appear to be) the norm, at least when it comes to some things.

Are you suggesting that I don't take into account how short hair fits in with the rest of a woman's features/traits when gauging how attractive I do or do not find it to be? Or was that just a general statement?

Personally, I've never told any woman, even a girlfriend, what she should do with her hair. As you mentioned, it really boils down to self-esteem, and if shorter hair gives a woman more self-esteem, it's possible that she'll be all the more attractive for it.

And just to clarify, I'm not suggesting that people should or should not feel a certain way, or that I'm superior or anything for feeling the way I do. I just genuinely find it fascinating how much one's tastes and feelings can diverge from (what can appear to be) the norm, at least when it comes to some things.
I wasn't thinking otherwise, myself.

Are you suggesting that I don't take into account how short hair fits in with the rest of a woman's features/traits when gauging how attractive I do or do not find it to be? Or was that just a general statement?
No, I was just expressing my own observation and my own tendency to really consider the whole package, and not any single aspect of a woman's looks or character. Yes, I love long hair, but I've found some women highly attractive who've had short hair, also.

(Edit: Come to think of it, the last time I was rejected for a date, it was a girl who had short hair.)

The older a women gets, the more masculine her features become. Short hair, will make them look older and manlier. While long hair will make everything flow much smoother, as well as taking attention away from the face. Not to mention, the short hair cut usually signifies a womens age. So even if they don't "look" older, they are perceived as older. Too much effort to maintain long hair after 50 years of doing so.

Nor I.

Yup. Likewise with longer hair.

Okay, cool. When I'm reading something and can't hear the other person's intended tone, I figure it's better for me to just ask if they were hinting at something or not.

That's true, if you associate short hair with masculinity and long hair with femininity. I'm probably unusual in that I don't, owing to the fact that most of my female relatives and (offline) friends have had short hair.

I've never noticed long hair drawing my attention away from someone's face to the point that it affected my perception of how young/old they look. Maybe it's because I don't have a predilection for it.

Yes, I imagine that probably is how the guys I was talking about look at it.

Um, no...we don't. If people want to approach us, that's nice, if they don't that's ok, but I don't feel responsable or obliged to make myself a certain way so they do.

I brush my teeth, and I pluck my chin hairs...I'm approachable.

There have been many times in my life where I have actively worked to not be approached, so I don't feel the sense of responsability you mention. Most people I'd be happy for them to stay away. The ones I wouldn't mind approaching me wouldn't care if I wore make up or not.

I've had nothing but compliments for my 'do' at the moment, and it's pretty short. Mainly from women, granted, but still...

It all depends on the guy I've noticed. I've had some surprising feedback from some men. I seem to have some trouble with not associating it with masculine at the moment though. It was ok at first, but I have been having some moments where I totally hate it and want my hair back...too late now though!

I've had more dates and attention from men since I shaved my head than when my hair was long...go figure?
