I was making a sandwich, and I put the cheese, and then the turkey pastrami. I was eating it RAW. I thought it was OK to eat like that, until I flipped it over and it said "warning make sure it's fully cooked to prevent illnesses and the such". I got so scared, I felt like I had to throw up, but as the day went on, I realized that I didn't get sick at all (yet!). I hope nothing happens to me. What do you think about this? Anyone else had such an experience? |

Raw meat is only dangerous because of the utterly atrocious environment and methods that meat is manufactured in in this country. Deli meat is particularly bad in this regard. But you'll only get sick if you're unhealthy or otherwise susceptible. I doubt you are. |

Raw poultry is never such a good idea, but if you have a good immune system I'm sure you'll be fine. I used to eat raw meat a lot. Usually raw steak though or liver. This was when I was age 9-12. I didn't have much sense then and ate raw pork once....and guess what happened? Nothing. I was just fine (even though eating raw pork is a VERY bad idea!) If eating the turkey tasted ok....and your guts feel normal....then I'd say you're just fine. |

I'm just amazed at how a human can eat something like this and NOT get sick. I clearly need to do more research... This is intriguing. Bluestar, you actually tried eating RAW pork? I'm scared to eat that stuff fully cooked. You have guts. |

held together with breadcrumbs & raw chicken eggs. Also added were scallions, & Black pepper, & served on warm bread. - had some worms, but not sick. Why? A child's immune system becomes acclimated to its culture. Would I eat that 'Fleisch-salat' still now? - Thanks! I'll pass. But Enjoying 2oz. sauteed Chicken-liver smothered in 1/4-lb.red sauteed onions....yum!! Last edited by sk8joyful; 09-08-2011 at 02:53 AM. Reason: forgot to add the Liver is 'cooked' :) | |

| Raw turkey pastrami??? That's weird. Where did you get that? I thought pastrami was cured - Pastrami - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I'm going to have a pastrami sandwich for dinner at Schlotszky's tomorrow, mmm. Regarding getting sick, if you keep your body chemistry alkaline, your body can fight off all kinds of stuff. |

Did you know there is a culture that eats raw meat (beef) and I have to admit I thought no way. Then I tried it and I like it! They have a special seasoning or spice they apply that is rare in our country. (I forgot, the beef is shredded). They also add course sea salt which serves like a seasoning and a preservative. Then they add their own spice butter and I tell you it is out of this world good. I never get sick. You do have the option of having it medium rare or well done as well, but the natives enjoy it raw. I can see why you did not get sick from the raw turkey pastrami. It is probably procured with salt before cooking. |

Raw beef is really nice. It's a while now since I ate it but it did taste good. Another interesting thing is thin slices of raw beef which has been marinated in red wine and chopped raw garlic, and kept in the refrigerator 24 hours like that....is really tasty with salad.

If you still feel fine by now, you should be OK. I think 24-72 hours is the typical incubation period for most food-borne illnesses. After all, there's nothing inherently wrong with raw meat - think of carpaccio, tartare, sashimi, etc. The only thing is that if you didn't get the organic stuff, you might be eating the gross crap/bacteria that might've come from poor food handling practices, but I think in this day and age, even that's more closely monitored, to avoid lawsuits etc, even despite the disclaimer. Don't make a habit out of it though, ESPECIALLY not with pork. Those are often infested with tapeworms - the kind that travel up to your skull and embed themselves right into your brain. NOTE: I'm not a doctor or any kind of medical or food expert, so don't sue me if you get sick. |

| I have no idea. I've been up to the Arctic twice but never tried it. I might try it just for the experience next time I'm fortunate enough to travel up there again. Another delicacy that Inuit children particular like is raw fish eyes. However, I'm not a big fan of any raw meat I've tried so far whether it's those thin strips of beef or sushi. Just don't like the texture. I can live without it. |
