I've been involved in three main sports for decades. Although I and others do not consider them to be 'extreme' sports, I am aware that many do. So I'm just curious to get some sort of public perception for the sake of interest. Which of the following sports do you consider to be the most 'extreme' (for the lack of a better term)? 1) Martial Arts (non-contact, non-MMA) 2) Scuba Diving 3) Downhill Snow Skiing |

The activities you've listed are extremely cool, but I don't consider them extreme sports. You could make the skiing extreme, though, like these guys: Extreme Skiing - YouTube Last edited by Johnny Metal; 09-07-2011 at 04:28 AM. |

I voted MA though it's not really that extreme. It's more extreme than the other two options though. If you'd put downhill mountain bike riding or mountain climbing, or even snowboarding out of a plane, then I would have voted for all three. |

Downhill Snow Skiing you can easily break your bones while still going downhill, there no stopping...you could be dead while still skiing now that's extreme, not to mention avalanches and if your not white you could racially attacked. Snow Skiing is extreme my friends.

I don't consider any of those particularly extreme... they can all be done by kids and at a really mellow rhythm. I voted scuba diving because I believe it's the only one that requires training and a license worldwide. Not a particularly good criteria, but hey...

That does not seem to be a valid question. All the choices have a very wide degree of ‘levels’ (extremeness). For instance skiing the bunny hill is less extreme than breaking a board with your bare fist which is less extreme than a black diamond run. It all depends on how extreme you make it. All three sports can be pushed to life threatening difficulties but mostly only to self, so I would rate them all equally potentially extreme.

I saw her down in the shop area about 4 hours later, in a full leg cast on crutches. I hid.

My answer would be, that it depends on how extreme you take yourself into them. Do you ski on the bunny slopes, or drop from helicopters onto mountaintops?

I don't think it is the sport that makes it "extreme" I think it is the person who takes the sport to the highest level that makes it "extreme" The novice 12 year old skiing down the mountain is not very extreme. The olympic athlete who does double backflips off a 20ft jump is extreme! The 12 year old "karate kid" is not very extreme. The guy who breaks 10 boards stacked on eachother and does backflips off the ground is extreme! Just my 2 sense |

Another way to view all this is that at least in my observation, I've seen more people during scuba diving and skiing get into 'trouble' than say in a martial arts class where things are more controlled. And these are folks getting into trouble without taking things to an 'extreme' level.

Unfortunately, we have the odd case where a recreational skier also dies on the slopes by running into a tree. I think that's how Sonny Bono died. And these are not extreme slopes we are talking about. And that actress who was married to Liam Neeson died with a head injury by falling on a beginner-intermediate run at Mt Tremblant, one of the places where I use to ski and teach.

These are not inherently "extreme" sports in my opinion. Skiing could be if you normally did aerials with somersaults thrown in. Scuba diving could be extreme if you go deep cave diving or are trying for some deep water record. Walking could be extreme if you do it barefoot in Death Valley in July. One example of an inherently extreme sport would be skydiving; you can't do that at less than all out. |
