In a few posts I've mentioned using an infrared sauna that I built a few months ago. Here I thought I'd post a link to the plans I'd used. The plans are free and I simply went by the hardware store to pick up the items mentioned and asked a worker at the store about how to do simple electrical wiring. Altogether everything cost less than $70. Commercial versions are usually well over $1000 (they have nice wood enclosures). A couple hours later everything was together and I was happily using it while reading a book. http://drlwilson.com/PRODUCTS/SAUNA%20PLANS.htm |

This link seems fairly unbiased between the two, as it sells both types (infrared and traditional). Infrared Sauna Vs. Finnish Saunas - Sauna Image.com Basically infrared uses less energy, may penetrate the body more deeply for a more thorough detox (more toxins come out in the sweat), and the air is cooler. Also, the infrared version that I built is much more portable, as it's essentially three heat lamps on a shelf that I can plug in anywhere and take into a small enclosed space. I've made a sweat lodge out of some green saplings lashed together and two old plastic tarps. The total cost would be about $40.00 for the tarps, if they were bought new. Of course, this wasn't anything remotely resembling portable, and we did need one person to stay out of the lodge to tend the fire and pass the glowing hot rocks inside with tongs. We had it near a pond that would half-freeze in the winter. After a good hour-long sweat, we would all run screaming out through the snow and leap into the frigid water. A bunch of Kentucky Hillbillies can have all kinds of fun on a shoestring budget!
