Today at the gym I did 45 minutes of cardio and 20 minutes of weight training. Thing is, it was in the form of fitness classes. I didn't use the treadmill. I have a belief that if you don't use the treadmill and go for a run, you won't lose weight or get a really good workout. Is that true? Or is that a limiting belief? This may be tied to my belief that working out is supposed to suck. |

Losing weight is mostly about diet. I didn't want to accept that for the longest time, but my most successful weight losses came from diet. You CAN lose weight by focusing on physical activity, but an hour a day isn't going to do it. If you want to lose weight by exercise moreso than diet, then your life is going to have to revolve around a LOT of physical activity...activity that makes you sweat. If you don't want to change what you eat, then plan for being physically active for about 3 to 4 hours or more per day. Or you can meet in the middle...you can exercise for an hour a day, and go on a half diet...where you eat MOSTLY non-fattening foods (fruits and vegetables, lean meats, etc.), with the occasional fatty food. It's all about what you'd rather do...would you rather restrict your diet down to bare bones, ramp up your physical activity to make it a huge part of your life, or strike a balance somewhere in the middle. |

| They're just inquiries of exploration, to help you answer your own questions -- the ones you asked in your OP. I think it's a lot more valuable to get your own answers than it is for people to tell you what they believe the answers are, don't you? It's the difference between insight and data.

Any calorie burning workout program would help you with weight loss. I've lost 10 lbs last month by running outside and playing badminton. As long as you truly commit to your exercise. Of course I can't ignore the effects of diet. |

My favorite forms of exercise are basketball, push ups and sit ups, and some free weights. I do one, the other, or all a little bit each day, nothing incredibly strenuous. I have a lot of fun with basketball, and probably get the most vigorous exercise there.

I took dance classes for like, 12 years, and was as skinny as a rake while eating like a horse. To be fair, it was more than 8 hours of classes a week. But to answer your question, yes, it is possible to lose weight and maintain it through methods other than a treadmill. I would not know how to operate a treadmill if I got on one. A friend of mine cycles a lot, and doesn't have an ounce of fat. Another friend does a lot of yoga and is in amazing shape. Another friend does absolutely no formal exercise but has two extremely boisterous children to chase around after. If you want to rely on exercise to lose weight, my recommendation would be to choose the type you like best and do it really consistently (like every day). Otherwise, you're really going to have to focus on your diet too. |

There are people who go to the gym and run on the treadmill EVERY DAY and they don't lose a pound of extra weight. Cardio is only one aspect of weight loss, and it seems to be a fairly small one too! You'll lose more fat by doing weights and interval work than you'll EVER lose doing long, slow cardio!

I have found that cardio is necessary for most women to lose weight, especially if they only have 5-10 pounds to lose. However, weight training is super good for maintaining a high metabolism and shape after you've lost the weight. Both are critical. You might want to work just one muscle group per cardio session though. This will allow you to focus on and work that muscle more intensely, and you probably won't have a lot of energy left after your cardio workout. Allison |
