I have read that research on subliminal messages hasn't turned up any effects, although I haven't read the actual research papers. I know that some measurable effects were reported from visual messages flashing on a screen quicker than our eyes can consciously perceive, in fact this is so reliable that it's now regularly used as a way of researching different topics. But... the effects are not substantial or long-lasting. Then again, they only try it once and I imagine you'll be programming yourself over and over. I know that the main thing used in support of subliminal messages (the coke/popcorn thing) turned out to be grossly exaggerated, and a number of follow ups of this test and similar ones didn't work. So while I can't say 100% that they don't work, personally, I'd rather use stuff I can consciously attend to, especially given that hypnosis does have some evidence backing it up. Although, if you have say, some music with subliminal messages there's no cost to playing it while you're doing something else. |

I think it has a lot to do with the quality of the recordings, and the significance of the wording in the over/underlays. I work as a clinical hypnotherapist and recommend some 'whisper subliminal' recordings to clients to help them move forward on their issues. From my experience I know that a good number of people have been helped by subliminal recordings for aiding concentration, and also for relaxation and boosting confidence. Students have reported a definite improvement in their concentration levels by playing the appropriate whisper subliminal recordings in the background while they work. And some clients, who are teachers, have reported that playing subliminal recordings for relaxation and confidence boosting when they've been teaching classes has resulted in much better class behaviour and a more focused attitude towards the lesson, and now wouldn't be without them. Consistency may also be an issue here - as you can't just play a recording once or twice and expect to have 'cured' a problem. Like all hypnotic suggestions, subliminal suggestions will only 'hold' in the mind/body for a certain period of time (approximately two weeks) and then need refreshing. Unless you are dealing with rooting out the causes of a particular problem you will need to keep playing such recordings in order to experience any gains. It would be good to have some further studies done on this issue so that the wording, phraseology and number of overlays and underlays can be taken into account - also to find out whether they are more effective with or without music being added. In the meantime, I will continue to promote some of these recordings to my clients and monitor the feedback I receive. |
