Question Personal Trainer

Hi all,

I lead a pretty good lifestyle, physically, but I want to get to a higher level. The reasons for this are

a) aerial silks training
b) as a dance instructor and performer, I feel I should have a very fit body...For marketing, setting a positive example for my students, getting better gigs, etc.

I was wondering if anyone in these forums has had personal experience with a Personal Trainer. If so, how helpful was it? How often would you have to go? How expensive (Money is very tight, but I would consider this an investment in my business.)?

I think I would just like to meet with one once a month, to tell me exactly what I need to do. There is so much contradictory info on the internet, and I think it would be cheaper to hire someone else to figure it all out, than to waste my time and money trying to do it by myself. But, having never experienced it myself, I would like to hear from those of you who have.

Thank you!

I am a personal trainer, so I can tell you what I think you should look for:

(1) Good certification -- e.g. NASM, NSCA, ACE or ACSM

(2) Insurance -- make sure your trainer is insured.

(3) Personal assessment -- Don't use any trainer that does not do a detailed invidivdual assessment. He/she should be able to identify postural distortions, and have an individualized game plan for remedying them.

(4) Individual program -- He/she should write a program individualized for you, and he/she should be able to justify each and every exercise in that program with respect to how it will help you to attain your goals.

I agree that you probably don't need anyone to workout with you all the time. They should probably meet with you twice in the beginning. The first time to do the assessment. Then they should spend some time figuring out a good program for you. Then the second time they should go over that program with you. After about 4 to 6 weeks, you should probably meet with them again to have them reassess and advance your program.

These are just some quick thoughts. Hope they help you out.

Best,
Joey
