| Are you looking for flattering clothing? Is there an upscale clothing store with larger sizes? Maybe the sales people could help with some pointers. If that's not available, do you have a trusted friend who could go along with you when you shop? They could help you decide which outfit is more flattering, and hopefully WHY it's more flattering. The type of clothing depends on your shape, too. For example, if your hips are large, you wouldn't want to wear bright patterns (and especially horizontal stripes) on the bottom. And good for you for starting exercising! At any weight, you'll look better with a firmer body. |

| How tall are you? A healthy tan would help most anyone (just be careful of burning, of course). While you say one can't lose fat and put on muscle at the same time, building muscle will go a long way towards helping burn fat. About a decade ago my dad went from 372 pounds at 48% bodyfat to 310 pounds and 27% bodyfat. He'd have been skinny at 260 pounds, but sleep apnea got in the way of his progress. He did incredible amounts of weight on leg presses. Likely the easiest way to increase your calorie burning ability is to build up your leg/back muscles and use heavy compound movements (leg press, squats, and deadlifts with proper form). |

| haris are you a man or a woman? if youre a man, you'll want to stay away from double-breasted jackets, pleated/cuffed trousers, and anything that is made from bulky fabrics (like a big bulky sweater). you cant go wrong with thin layers in good natural fabrics (like a cotton button down and a fine-gauge sweater), well-fitted but not too tight jackets, and flat-front, straight-leg pants. if you're a woman, it depends heavily on whether you are an apple shape (thick waist, narrow hips, like me) or a pear shape (narrow waist, thicker hips and thighs). apple shapes do well with constructed jackets and shirts (constructed = waist/boob darts to give you a waistline) and pencil skirts or moderately a-line skirts. pear shapes do well with fitted tops and a-line skirts with a narrow waist and lots of volume below that. pretty much any woman's body looks good in a pair of dark-washed, straight leg jeans that hit the widest part of your body and go straight down from there. please stay away from anything tapered or really flared. do you have tivo? set it to record "what not to wear" on TLC -- i've learned so much about styling from that show, and also from just observing how people look on the street. what strikes me as nice, what strikes me as not so nice? hope this helps, madge edited to add: the worst mistake most large people make is wearing clothes that are way too big for them to hide the shapes of their bodies. this only makes them look bigger. most of us look much more put together in clothes that fit us well with shaping/seaming/darting to add/subtract curves where needed.

| I don t know if you re a guy or a girl...Anyway, as a plus size woman and a costumer, the best advice I can impart, that won t be redundant to the excellent advice that has been given previously, is to invest in good clothes alteration. The first day I walked on a movie set, thinking that all Size 0 actresses could magically fit in any dress or pair of pants thrown their way, I was struck by lightning when I realized we had to alter most every piece of clothing for them. If you are a woman, it is especially important to get your shirts fitted ( if are big chested, it is almost impossible to find the kind of shirt that will make you look good). Also, make sure that, when wearing tee shirts, they are not too long. Have them altered if necessary. Beware of thin, slinky fabric such as viscose or stretch polyester, that will emphasize every imperfection. Prefer thicker fabrics that don t cling. You could invest in 3 great pairs of pants, including a great fitting pair of jeans ( as suggested above), get them altered too. Buy clothes that have good quality fabric that can be easily altered. Most cheap options are very badly constructed, with threads that are coming out at the seams. If you are on a budget, it's worth it to invest in great quality clothing and wear it often. For example, you could wear the same shirt on Monday and Thursday, if you are creative with accessories, no one will notice you have worn the same piece twice a week. Get used to handwashing and air drying in order to keep your higher end clothing in mint shape. And best of luck with your weight loss! |
