Default Let the New Year Rush Begin!

Now that the New Year began, I'm sure you're aware that the gym gets busy... Do you feel more motivated to go to the gym when the New Years resolution people come to workout or do you feel more discouraged?

Discouraged... Tho, I can see how people might find it encouraging. Being around people who aren't in the best of shape, might make you look/feel better.

I rather not show up at the gym in January. A gym full of over weight unhealthy people, not knowing what the hell they are doing. Taking time/space up on the machines I wanna use. Going from machine to machine, with out a rhyme or reason. Parking lots are packed, as well as more chance of getting your car damaged. The saunas would be packed, and people opening the door for ever, letting out all the heat.

lol well, I think you get the point.

I know that in six weeks things will have died down sufficiently so as to keep me hiding out in the free weights section...nobody goes there LOL

The gym I go to isn't so big on machines, as most people come there to climb or take classes like yoga, zumba, pilates, boxing, spinning, etc. I've never once seen the machine area even one quarter full!

I'm eager to get back into the gym as I ate far too many sugary things over the holidays, and it will feel good to be with my climbing friends again. I haven't been in for 2 weeks, and I can definitely feel the difference. If there are a bunch of new members, that's great! More people to climb with.

I have a beautiful big gym in my apartment complex, open 24 hours, with big screen tvs and bottled water and everything, and I'm usually alone in there -- never more than 2 or 3 others. I love it, but I do sort of miss my old gym in Santa Monica with the movie stars. My workouts were a little more spicy.

Ha! Sounds like you're quite irritated about the fact - I don't blame you! LOL Now let me ask you.. When you see a newbie doing something improper (ie bad form), do you speak up or just let them be?

I miss going to the gym. I'm not motivated enough to go back at this time, and I like to conveniently blame my current living situation making it such that a trip to the gym is an hour round trip for me. And my other favorite excuse is that the gym I like has really crappy hours (wishing I could find a gym like that that is open 24 hours in my hometown).

So, this year I'm probably going to miss out on the new year rush.

Is it pleasant, carrying so much disdain for people to whom you've never even spoken?

You wanna see it as disdain, that's fine. I shared my opinion, because they get in the way of my work out, with me knowing that 95% of them will not only fail/quit, but will probably hurt them selves in the process. On top of that, they don't give a crap about what I say, when I try to help them out. You know, the people you seem to think I've never spoken with.

It's not me passing judgment on them. It's me pointing out exactly what is. They are over weight. They are unhealthy. And they don't know what they are doing, and they take up all the machines/weights. How else would you like me to describe it that passes your test?

You're probably coming to them with the same condescending attitude that you bring here. If you think of them as unhealthy, overweight people who have no idea what they are doing and will almost certainly fail, do you really think that you're still managing to approach them in a helpful and non-judgmental manner?

I love how everybody focuses on fitness more around the New Year. I won't be heading to the gym this year though; I have everything I need set up at home. As a bonus, I get to work out with my husband, who has never had time for the trip to the gym. And my kids can watch and/or participate if they like.

It's not judgmental. I'm sorry, but they are what they are. Judging them would me thinking they are bad people for it, or less worthy then me. I am making an observation. I'm viewing them in ONE specific situation in life. And in this situation, they ARE over weight, they ARE unhealthy, and they do not know what they are doing, and they will fail. How else are you expecting me to see it? I'm an optimist as much as the next guy, but it's a known fact that only 20% of the new years people actually continue on for longer then a month. And after that, it normally drops down to 10%. That's right from the mouth of the managers of the gym, my next door neighbor being one of those managers and his son being another. I can also clearly see that they are doing the exercises wrong, in a way that will hurt them. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see if a person is over weight, and over weight almost always means unhealthy.

Should I not look at them as over weight? Pretend like they are going to continue going to the gym for ever and ever, and that they are actually doing the exercises right?

And no, I'm not going to them with any condescending attitude. You can't read **** from me on an online forum, where you can't see my tone or my voice. So stop trying to pretend like you can read a person through text.

I've seen the way you've presented me on this forum, time and time again, so who are you to talk to ME about not judging someone?

You know next to nothing about their health, and you make no effort to hide your disdain. If people are not responding well when you approach them, it might be a good idea to work on your approach.

I think it's possible to read a lot about a person by how they present themselves, in person or online. It's unfortunate that you're unable to see what an awesome person I am, but hey, what can I do?

I know plenty about their health. I have been around enough people and have trained enough people, to easily gauge someones health visually and with my interactions with them. You calling it disdain over and over again, isn't going to make it true. People don't respond well when ANYONE tries to explain to them that something they aren't doing isn't the best way to do it. Only time they heed advice, is when they ask for it. So, it's not ME, but the person. I'm a very friendly person, in person. I'm never mean or get angry. There is nothing about my approach that would turn a person off, other then their need to be correct. Only people who have open minds, would take advice from someone. Everyone else, always thinks they know everything.

I think it's possible, yet you aren't doing a good job of it at all. And for you to say you are an awesome person? Conceited much? Man, if only you could see that I'm a nice person, but hey, what can I do?
