| I just wanted to mention that I'm now on the going back to cooked phase, and you'll probably find the picture archive interesting over the next few days as I start putting water weight back on.

| Interesting blog and an even more interesting diet and goal. Two cups of lentils only supplies about 36 grams of protein and nothing in the rest of your diet contains the aminos necessary for your body to assimilate any more protein. A nursing infant takes in more protein. What is the benefit? Bananas and potatoes are very high on the glycemic index and will spike insulin levels dramatically, particularly when consumed in the absence of a protein. Your pancreas is definitely getting a workout. What is the benefit? Your goal appears to be to “lose weight”. But what kind of weight are you losing? Lean tissue? Adipose tissue? Are you having a body composition analysis performed as you go? If not, how do you know what you are losing? Just curious. Cheers, Mike |

| Waterweight, actually, as I described in my blog. My experiment was successful in that I quickly shed about 14 pounds of waterweight (a small amount of which may have been fat). I'm not sure if you read the background info on the site, but I am now in the process of going back to a cooked diet. The blog explains the whys. The diet I'm eating now is not the diet of the experiment, but rather a "recovery diet" as I phase back to a cooked vegan diet. As for the protein, there is a large misconception about the amount of protein ones needs in a diet. Second, most people would be surprised to know that their is a fair deal of protein in green vegetables. 100 calories of broccoli has more protein that 100 calories of steak. May I suggest that you read this article which should answer your questions, and also check out the excellent book: Eat To Live, not to talk about raw diets, but rather healthy levels of nutrients, etc. As for the raw diet, I'm coming off of, if you're still interested, Dr. Doug Graham's Foodnsport.com has info in that article and others under the articles tab, and he also has a book, The 80/10/10 diet, which you can find in his online store. What gives? |

| Well, the exact citation for protein in broccoli per 100 calories vs meat comes from Eat To Live. I highly suggest you check out the book; it's excellent. I was doing internet searches for the info to post directly, but all I could find was stuff not backed up by studies/science and written by a doctor, which ETL is. However, I found this quote from The Nutrient Rich Blog, which I know nothing about. Quote:

| I'd like to see that citation, because it doesn't make any sense if you think about it a little.. I can explain later. Cheeseburger is not a steak. Don't get me wrong, I love veggies and I'd pick broccoli over steak any time, but I'm smelling some terrible misinformation |

I know a burger is not a steak, and as I said, It was merely something I randomly found in a google search. I won't be typing up an entire chapter from the book to provide you with what you're looking for, but I encourage you to look into it.

| protein is over hyped. this has been discussed over and over in Steve's blog and forum. decrease in animal protein in the diet is certainly not going to harm you, there are other nutrients to worry about you know on a raw or vegan diet you do need to eat a balanced diet, especially here in the US. People who are veggie or vegan from birth know by instinct how to balance their diet. but our american food habits are faar from balanced. so when a nonvegetarian moves of a vegan diet, i've seen a tendency to eat too much refined carbs or too little lentils/grains. |
