Default Diet

I am trying to develop a inexpensive and nutritious diet.

I am wondering if anyone has recommendations on what to stock my kitchen with so that i have good nutrition, but don't spend to much money.

It also needs to be fairly simple to prepare, since i am just not very good in the kitchen.

What would be great would be just a list of what i should keep in stock, and maybe a few simple recipes.

Thanks

Careful with the nuts, though. It is possible to eat about 6 servings of nuts without even realizing. Also, I personally recommend Skim Milk.

Also:

Couscous
hummous (Both of these can be bought in boxes. Make sure there aren't bad additives)
Kashi Bars or 100% Dehydrated Fruit Bars for when you need to eat on the go

If you are not already veg, then cut down on your meat intake, and replace with fish or other food.

Stay away from fast food and soda pop. They are eeeeevil. If you need to eat on the road, I prefer a Subway veggie sub. If you need flavoring in your water, make herbal tea. I like peppermint, or spice mixes.

If you want to eat less of something (chocolate, fast food, etc) make sure you have another food to replace it. When I am craving chocolate (pretty much all the time) I eat some fruit first and see if that helps.

Check out the Ingredients of foods. Even cereals that advertise themselves as "healthy" often times have a whole lot of sugar. Most applesauce has corn syrup and such added, as do most juices, or canned fruit. Look for things like "100%" fruit. Or find a brand you KNOW is good. I trust anything that says Kashi.

plus canned wild Alaskan salmon and/or sardines in water or olive oil. Both are cheap, fairly safe sources of omega-3.
