I started doing the 5 rites but it just brought back my back problem really bad. I have one vertebra in my lower back that has shifted into my body for a whole centimeter so my spinal cord hasn't got a lot of room there. I was told not to arch my back backwards ever! But I just can't stand the idea that I am not able to do a lot of exercises! I started doing 14 reps then made a pause and then tried 3 but it hurt very much. I am an former athlete, and I did yoga for years so I am doing it right. Venting...

Ouch, have you tried cranio sacral therapy to realign your body? Do you know why the vertebrae ended up like that?

I tried a lot of things but nothing really works. The funniest thing is it does not hurt if live a totally sedentary life which is ludicrous!

Nobody knows what happened. There are 3 theories:
1. I was born with it
2. It was a spot injury
3. I happened over time...

I really don't care I just want my body back!

Perhaps you are evolving into Homo Sedentarius

Contact National Geographic!

But in all seriousness that sounds awful. I bet if you worked with it consistently over a period of a few years with an excellent physical therapist you could get it to slip back in place. You'd have to really stick to it though. I have a rib that is slipped underneath the rib above it and occasionally it limits my lung capacity and I've often wondered if perhaps doing yoga so much that I can stretch to a point where it just shifts out would be possible. How flexible did you get with your yoga practice?

Nope, everybody says there is no theory for it to move back into place not even surgery can do it, at least not yet.

I'm sorry if this sounds wrong but I think this is fascinating. It's like a mystery. Perhaps I watch House too often. Which vertebrae is it anyway? I hope you don't mind all the questions

Oh, this is such a pity marinik! Do you know which of the exercises causes the problem? I think it should be okay to continue with the other exercises, and maybe the ones that are causing you a problem you can modify a little so your back doesn't do the full arch.

It must be very frustrating when your body just doesn't behave!

I've tried doing them for a stretch of about 1 month, and I must say that it made me feel exceptionally healthy.

I'd love to hear from others who have been doing them for even longer than that - what are your results?

For convenience, here is a site that offers the official book in condensed form, including full instructions on how to do them. The site is 100% free: Print Version - Five Tibetan Rites
Thanks for this post! I have been an off and on user of yoga since my early teens (mostly off, lol). This past month I've tried to get more serious about it because I really love to practice it and it makes me feel so relaxed and amazing afterwards.

I've started doing the alternate exercises this past week to work my way into the full rites. I can already tell that these work really well and I think that they are simple enough that I will stick to doing them. I even did them every morning when I was on vacation these past three days! Its rare I find a yoga/exercise routine that I get excited about so thank you again for this.

I did this rites but only for 2 weeks. At first I felt energized, but after a week, I don't feel any improvement, I feel tired, got bored and quit

It's not because the exercise is not good, but maybe because I should address my emotional issues first

Hi Marinik,

Take a look at this exercise; it allows for control and movement of each individual vertebra and can even repair scoliosis.

Bend the Bow Spinal Qigong

This is an advanced qigong practice, so it would require learning and practicing some other exercise first, before you could learn this one.

Takes me around 10 minutes on average for all 21 reps.

I've been doing them 6 days a week since the beginning of April, and I haven't noticed a thing.
