Default Exercises At Home

Raising 3 young children, it’s not always easy to get to the gym. What are some high cardio, intense workouts that I can do at home (without the need for equipment)?

From what I hear, raising three children is intense high cardio workout!

Seriously, there's tons of things you can do. If nothing else, make a mix of dance music, push all the chairs out of the way in the living room and have a one hour dance party! Really. Half to one hour of continuous disco or hip hop dancing and your heart will be thumpin...

I've heard good things about P90X.

I prefer yoga and a jogging stroller, although my little guy can walk almost 2 miles now (with some piggy back rides)

If you have stairs run up and down them about 30 -50 times. You'll definitely get a good workout from that

Ive just bought the 30 Day Shred DVD. It's short and high intensity circuit training that can be done in a small space. It's got very good reviews and I can see the difference in my friend who has been doing it for 3 weeks.

I shadow box along with jogging in place when doing cardio at home. Very effective.

Great for abs. Exercise reduces your chances of getting breast cancer. Here is Dr Oz's 7 minute daily workout. Workout Videos | HealthCorps

Just one exercise. Do burpees. If you manage to do 100 of those you will be in pretty good shape.

I'm not sure if you want only cardio workouts, but there are quite a few great classes on Do Yoga With Me | Free Online Yoga Pose and Class Videos, that offer intense workouts, mixed with stretching.

In particular, Connections to Core or Foundations in Flow with Fiji McAlpine are great workouts... challenging, focusing on core strength and will definitely make you sweat!

That looks like a pretty good exercise. However, I would advise warming up your wrists a little before doing it. If you added some push ups, and maybe bought a pull-up bar and tried doing some chin ups, you would have a quite decent home workout. It might also be good to add some ab exercise like V-ups in your case.

He turned 2 last July. He's an adventurer, though. He can already run almost a mile, too.

Yesterday I messed up my neck, though, we were on our usual walk and these 2 big dogs had gotten loose, so I had to scoop up my 30 lbs toddler and pretty much run about 1/2 mile while occasionally stopping to kick the dogs away. But I'm a scrapper so it didn't phase me too much.

We normally take 2 walks - 1-2 miles in the AM and in the evening I jog/walk 3-5 miles with him in the jogging stroller.

At March of Dimes earlier this year I saw one mama with a double jogging stroller. That would be like an upper body and a lower body workout simultaneously.

Also, I watch a little girl some afternoons who is the same age as my son. I pick her up from her daycare which is like a mile away, and I wear the ergo and push the stroller, so one kid is strapped to my back and the other one rides in the stroller.

That's a helluva workout!

My Dad was career military, so he was "militant" (haha) about conditioning the body for endurance from an early age. No weight lifting until we reached skeletal maturity, though.

I did all of p90x and got stronger and broke a weight loss plateau doing it, all at home (and the plateau was I got from 275 to 205, and doing p90x helped me reach 180, then I started upping cardio and running/jogging/walking and got to 165, been lazy and am closer to 180 again :/)

I restarted P90x this week just for fun and to see how well I can keep up with it now.

I love shadowboxing as I do enjoy martial arts, so that is a good cardio workout. I guarentee if you shadowbox as a routine you'll lose weight/have a stronger heart/lungs.

Theres another video program called insanity, I cant keep up with it well but my bestfriend did it and he got good results from it, its more tiring than P90X though.

Oh and wanted to recommend yoga along with other people here, to me its like the glue that holds all other training goals together. Theres lots of free resources to get into yoga, just poke around (websites, youtube, mobile apps)

My CardioVascular Plan- simple and only takes about 10 to 15 minutes tops.

It uses 3 excersises that work most of your body. Each exercise is at 30 second intervals. Switch quickly between them.

High Knees
Burpies
Mountain Climbers (Only 1 leg on the ground at a time)
Rest then repeat tell your selected time goal is done

Hope this helps out!

Looks like a nice routine you have.

Is this the mountain climber exercise you are doing?
YouTube - Calisthenics Exercises : Mountain Climbers & Calisthenics

How long is your rest cycle? How many burpies do you manage in 30 seconds? How fit would you describe yourself?

That's truly incredible! I have one who just turned 2 in September and as of last night (trick or treating), she was quite adamant about pushing her own stroller lol... but running a mile is awesome!!
