Default Just Bought a Bunch of Stuff from the Grocery Store

- Coriander seeds
- Black pepper
- Mustard seeds
- Rosemary
- Parsley
- Basil
- Ginger
- Cumin seeds

I was a little disappointed to pay that much for it but I truly want to explore/experiment with foods just out of curiosity to make food more interesting and to maximize my health.

I also have these herbs:
- Cinnamon
- Peppermint
- Curry

Anyone here who uses lots of spices/herbs?

I don't use them a lot because they can be expensive and I don't know what to do with them . I do have a load of those powder/ground herbs in bottles though (in other words not the fresh stuff!)

I sometimes use cinnamon or nutmeg in smoothies, but actually prefer the taste without. Peppermint may be nice in smoothies.

Cumin I think I use in hummus.. and perhaps some other herbs, I forget.

And when I ate meat I used to smoother mixed herbs mixed with margarine on chicken breasts and then cook them, that was delish actually.

Do you have anything in mind to make with those herbs? Any recipes you want to try out?

Not sure what category garlic goes in but do you have any of that? I think adding garlic can create a nice taste in many dishes

Herbs and spices have some of the highest antioxidant levels of any food known. For example, one teaspoon of cinnamon has the antioxidant capacity of a half-cup of blueberries.

I throw in a mix of cilantro, basil, parsley, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, turmeric and black pepper into my smoothies just for the antioxidants.

Wow ... I had no idea about any of that. I guess I'll be putting cinnamon in my smoothies more often now.

You can find some good Indian recipes on the internet that use cumin, ginger, cinnamon, black pepper and coriander.

Generally I would rather look for recipes that interest you, and then buy the spices/herbs you need, rather than buying spices just because they sit on the shelves. I am not sure you will finish your mustard seeds in your life time, but if you do, please share some recipes (I also have some left)....

I add garlic and onions in pretty much everywhere, I love how they taste.

I add a lot of them to my omelets but I'm just learning and trying to find out where they fit.

A tip: remove margarine from your diet. That crap is lethal. Try to find a good natural butter instead...

I spent the whole last week reading about herbs/spices and the health aspect of them. That was all I needed to know to buy them. The taste aspect is secondary for me. Besides, once you get used to something, you start to like it. Not long ago, I absolutely hated oatmeal, now I think my life would be miserable without it.

I put a lot of mustard seeds in my omelet. Where do you put them?

Cumin seeds are something I can't seem to like/find out where they could go. Where do you put them? In salads, cakes?

You can use cumin seeds together with mustard seeds in "Panch Foron", which is a 5 spice mix quite commonly used in Indian recipes. Check them out.

All those food spices last for ages so it is good value for money.

My main condiments are salt, if I use anything else I get complaints, so I don't try any funny business.

I used to, having worked in a restaurant I have to say that herbs/spices are the secret to great tasting food.

Try grinding up some cumin and coriander, and frying potatoes with that and rosemary.

Yum

Cool! I'm having ginger stir-fry right now in fact. I just cook up whatever I have on hand. This time it's peas, celery and sweet potatoes.

Yes I use lots of herbs. The most studied herb/spice today for preventing cancer is tumeric. It is in curry but you can also buy it and add it. I use curry and add extra tumeric. The tumeric works much better with black pepper and you have that. I use Trader Joes 21 Seasoning Salute that includes black pepper.

Garlic is in some curry but it is also great for health. I chop up fresh garlic and add it to my food. Also cayenne (red pepper) is good for health but is usually also in curry. But I add more of it with my curry. So with the 21 herbs in that one TJ bottle, I must use around 30 spices. Then I also use about 30 herbs a day that come from the Amazon rainforest and about 25 herbs that are Chinese herbs.

I use cumin in my curry mix and often in mexican cooking. I'm about to make some red enchilada sauce with chipotle peppers in adobo sauce and a pinch of cocoa. Yum.

Heeeey, that sounds like something I could do. I remember I found some weird herb in the cupboard, ground some up, and tossed it in my beer bread batter. It was a good taste, but I put way too much in; next time, I'll know.

Good meal comin' up, whoop yeah!
