12:40 AM. Here I go. My longest fast has been for 5 days. My goal: always 10. I decided to join here because I saw other people have water fasting journals/logs and the people that respond are very supportive. Maybe that's what I need..support. All my water (short, less than 2 or 3 days) fasts have been done alone. Not eating food would freak my parents out so I hidden it. Well I'm 18 years old, and a girl. I don't need to tell you that I want to lose weight, but I am also a health nut too so I want this cleansing that happens with the body. A fresh start. I really believe all the benefits are real. The five days I fasted successfully, I felt amazing. But so, so drained of energy that I just gave up. And of course, REGRETTED. haha. Yes I should be in bed, yes I should do my homework that is due tomorrow. But I can't. I have to post this tonight. I feel like I have to complete a 10 day fast to feel right. Even if no one responds, it's nice to write out my feelings/etc without my snoopy sister or family being able to find and read it...and then making fun of me. The dreaded part....Weigh in: 143.5 lbs. !!!!! I'm embarassed to admit that none of my jeans but one or two fit anymore. And i'm NOT going to buy them in a larger size. My goal weight is 120 lbs. Although ideally 110 would be nice..but right now, I just wanna reach 120. Yes. I do feel pathetic. But I don't care. I've bottled up my emotions for the last time. On the outside, I am a bubbly, happy-go lucky, funny, carefree, whatever kid. But inside...I just wanna be at my normal weight again..it's all I can think about. I know if I can get through this fast, I'll finally be free. ------------ Welll I hope that doesn't sound too corny or cheesy or stupid. Now...here's how tomorrow looks: 630 AM Going to wake up early, go for short run, do HW, etc 810-1240 I have class Break until 2:30 2:30-5:50 Chem Lab 6 Home around then. going to make a goal for going to bed at 9 ish? I've been deprived of sleep for a long time now. I'm hoping this will be a good day...keeping busy all day helps time fly by. Hope that wasn't too boring. Kkk. well nights. =) |

1:20 PM (12 hours) Alright...doing fine I think. I didn't run this morning as I wanted but maybe I can run tonight if I'm not too worn out. Bad breath is starting to kick in. My least favorite symptom of fasting. I can deal with the weakness and short blackouts but...not a big fan of bad breath...well because I gotta talk to people! haha |

Primarily i just wanted to offers some support and well wishes, but i was also curious about your short blackouts and how you said you can deal with them. How does that work exactly? Fasting is awesome in many ways (cleansing, healing and revitalizing the body for starters), but as a weight loss tool i would encourage you to keep in mind that a lot of the loss is temporary... intestinal contents and temporary water. There is definately some fat loss (the only kind of loss we should really be striving for and excited about), but in itself fasting is not really the fat loss solution people might hope for or imagine and when the temporary portion of the losses return (which they almost certainly will) it would be good to remain encouraged, knowing that this was to be expected. The fat we burn in a fast can be kept off, yes, (and even a portion of the overall water loss in many instances), but how can we possibly keep the temporary water and the intestinal contents from returning? Fasting can very much help us to eliminate bad habits and embrace good ones. In particular we generally emerge from a fast with a heightened appreciation for healthy foods and a woeful distain for junk. It is a good time to reflect upon and plan the healthful choices we intend to embrace. Though fasting is in no way the complete, stand alone fat burning solution, it can certainly kick start us towards our goals (for fat loss and otherwise) providing us with a clean slate and a great opportunity to make all the right choices. | |

The lack of energy that you feel is because that energy is focused inside to heal anything that is wrong and to cleanse at an accelerated rate. Now some people say you do not need to fast since the body cleanses itself all of the time. That is like saying that John Doe does not need to make an extra income. But at the same time that J.D. is making money, he is spending more money than he is making and now is in debt. So if you take in more toxins than you get rid of then you get a back log called toxemia that can lead to many problems like cancer. So fasting is a chance to get rid of toxins faster than you are taking them in or producing them. (When you eat food, your body creates metabolic toxins). Here is a webpage all about fasting with quotes from 23,000 different medical doctors. Actually only 23 MDs. But one MD that is also a psychiatrist uses fasting for weight loss. Also The New England Journal of Medicine quote on that webpage is in favor of it for weight loss. But what do they know? Of course what you consume after the fast determines how much you gain back. MST reports his weight loss everyday on a fast and is proud of his weight loss. The reason that you lose water weight on a fast is because you are not consuming salt. Salt is not a food and put 4 ounces of it in water and dirink it and it will kill you. Now Steve Pavlina says that is a lot of salt. But 4 ounces of food is not much food. But it is for a rock that is 50% sodium. See they measure food in ounces but minerals in milligrams. So 4oz of salt weighs 114,000 mg and contains around 70,000 mg of sodium. They recommend that you keep it below 2,000 mg a day but there is no reason to eat salt. Now I am thin and never was overweight. I just did a 28 day fast. I weighed myself at the beginning and then weighed myself about 2 and half weeks later and had lost 10 pounds. On the 28th day, I had lost a total of 15 pounds. The reason that I checked was to make sure that I did not lose too much weight since I am slender. I did not keep a log since my body is so good at it now that I feel mostly just the same as when not fasting. But if I think about not eating then it hurts (mentally). | Actually if you read my posts it should be infinately clear that i don't value the overall weight loss at all, only the portion that is fat. Quite to the contrary of being "proud of my fasting weight loss", i feel it is quite an over-rated and meaningless statistic, not only nothing to be proud of, but also nothing to become the least bit excited about. The weight loss number is only important to me in the sense that i feel a certain responsibility to let people know that a good part of it is only temporary so that they're not discouraged when it returns.

Yep... I second what Reiki says... get some help, honey. I'm all for fasting under the right conditions but I think your motivations are all wrong, the fact that you are still a teenager and fasting is problematic (you're not even done growing yet!) and the blackouts are a MAJOR concern. There are healthier ways of losing fat. I find it impossible to believe that you can be 'a health nut' and still think you need to lose 20 percent of your body weight. Especially by going on a crash diet with no apparent management of the process outside of 10 days of starving yourself. I know that's absolutely not what you want to hear, but there are a lot of people here who would be only too happy to give you advice on losing weight under the right conditions (knowing height to calculate BMI would be a good start) that does not involve such a drastic and unhealthy measure. |
