Here's a little exclusivity for you forum buddies My husband is going to start a blog (well since he works long hours i will be doing a big part of setting it up and editing) about his work: physiotherapy (physical therapy). He graduated in 1995 so he has fifteen years of experience in his field and i daresay he's really good at what he does. So if you have any questions you would like answered, please post them here or pm me. Please stick to the physiotherapy questions, anything along the lines of muscular-skeletal related matters, neurological physio, sport physio, post-trauma physio, pilates tips... you get the gist. We'll be setting all this up over the weekend. I will submit five questions to him but if there are more coming we can just put them on "waiting list" and see how many question he has the time to answer as we set up the site. |

Hope this falls within the scope... I've hurt my wrist about a year ago. Had a broken (thorn?) ... what's it called... ligament? Healed just fine, but now I cannot put any pressure on it for a long time or unexpected... Are there any exercises I can do that make my wrist normal and strong again? |

I'm myself at a point where I don't simply follow advice of people who don't know me. Nevertheless a few questions that I find interesting: A) What is the thing that Qi Gong or Yoga people talk about when they say Chi in terms of modern medicine? B) How do I get myself to do my daily exercise? C) I heard that there's the following technique to help people to touch their feet with their hands while having straight legs: 1. Try to reach as far down as you can. 2. Get up again. 3. Spin yourself a few times around your own axis. Then repeat 1 to 3 as often as necessary till you can reach own feet. Does this work for normal people (I'm have abnormal physiology and therefore can't try it myself)? Is it does work, why does it work? Is it dangerous? D) What's the most efficient way to increase muscle tonus? E) If one relaxes completely where does the feeling of warmth come from? If we get cold we produce warmth through muscle activation through trembling, this doesn't seem to be a likely explanation when muscles are relaxed. F) Is there a good way to learn to do a handstand when you have nobody as an assistant? G) What the best numeric measure of fitness to detect daily changes in fitness? Best meaning easy to measure, high reliability and having low noise.

Another question What is the best way to sleep? I usually sleep on my stomach but then half way I have to wake up because my arm is sleeping or my neck is hurting... If it is on your side, how should you lie? I usually have my head forward and my knees all the way up, like a little ball. Another one regarding sleep: How high / low / hard / soft should the ideal pillow be? What is better to do muscle exercise first or cardio exercise (if in one session you want to do both). When swimming usually my lower back hurts a bit. Other exercise as well, but I can control it better... is there something I'm doing wrong, or is that just because I'm not used to doing exercise (I'm not). |

(I hope this is relevant..) What kind of therapy/exercises would you recommend for a wheel chair bound person with rheumatoid arthritis? The arthritis has already caused deformations of the joints, inflamed knees and those bone nodules/growths. Range of motion and stretching come to mind but I'm not sure if that could make things worse. Is it safe to alternate hot and cold hydrotherapy? |

I have a specific question and I would be very very pleased to finally get a good answer. I practice yoga on a daily basis, more than once a day (because that is what you have to do with a toddler in tow!). I just notice that I have this kind of soreness or slight discomfort in the muscles of my inner thighs but on the posterior side of the inner thighs. This is getting graphic. OK, it's the muscles that are on the very inside edge of my inner things right below where the bum curve starts. I'm wondering if this may be related to the low back pain I occasionally have in the sacral area. I notice the discomfort mostly when I do forward bends, standing or sitting. It's almost like the medial side of both of my legs is shorter than the lateral sides. If that makes any sense. |

I don't actually know what constitutes physiotherapy, but I have a body-ache problem which interferes with my physical activity, so I'll ask it. I competed in and did gymnastics when I was younger and it seems as though I got lower back problems from that. Now, some weeks ago, in a bid to build up my strength again and get more energy, I began taking adult beginner gymnastics classes. I stopped, however, when I did a front handspring and ended up hurting my back when I landed. Meanwhile, I also do belly dancing, which involves a lot of positions with your chest up and your butt sticking out--arching your back in a "u". That also hurts my lower back. People keep telling me I hurt my back because it's too weak. The pain comes when I endeavor to do back-bends, or arch my back, like in belly dancing. I don't know what is causing it, but it's hard for me to believe it's because my back is weak. What could be the cause? And how can I get rid of the problem? I also really want to get my back more flexible, like it was when I was in gymnastics. I can do a back-bend nowadays (or the bridge in yoga), but it is like a minor project and I can't hold it long, because my arms and legs seem weak. I also try to bend my back (arching) doing handstands against the wall, also a yoga position called the camel (I think), which is a lot easier than the bridge. I used to be able to do back-walk-overs in gymnastics easily, and now I can't even go into a back-bend from a standing position. How can I get my back to bend and be really flexible easily without continuing to hurt it? I don't know if I should answer this, or why or if a physiotherapist would be able to answer this better than a gymnast, but you could try it against a wall if you have built up your arm strength. |

A couple years ago I tore my left MCL. It healed without any real treatment, but my knee is still a little loose. I only notice it once in awhile, with certain things that put pressure on it. Like sitting cross legged. I really felt the looseness in the pool doing frog-kick with breast stroke. What exercises, if any, could I do to tighten it up? I realize you can't 'fix' the ligament by exercise but getting nearby muscles engaged differently or something.

Oh and Lakshyayidhi Lakshmihi I'm very certain from your description he'll come up with the name of the muscle you're having trouble with, no worries. You can still post the photos for Vince and Lostmymap if you're inclined but Phil won't need any |

Hi Weena, Firstly, thanks to you and your husband for starting this thread, I think it can help a lot of people who can't afford to pay for physiotherapy. My problem is a lot of a pain in my shoulders and neck. I work at a desk using a computer all day and commute on a train for about 3 hours a day as well, so I know my habits aren't exactly conducive to avoiding this. I saw a chiropractor for about a year and a half. His photos showed that my neck is craned forward and slightly to the left, and my shoulders are very rounded. I stopped seeing him recently because I felt it wasn't helping as much as I thought it would for the money I was paying, and I was receiving better results with a sports massage therapist. The pain is focused on the left side of the little knobble where my neck meets my shoulders. When I touch that, it's excruciating and I can feel something moving around. The pain extends into my shoulders and sometimes down into my lower and mid-back- I have a round bum and there's always a large gap between me and the floor when I lie down, so I can't lie without my knees bent because it hurts too much. Every morning my neck is stiff- I can bend it to the right but not the left, so I bend it forward and around to the right and it gives an almighty crunch and then is more flexible. I do this regularly throughout the day and it gives one little crack each time. As I mentioned, I'm currently seeing a sports therapist (not regularly right now but I'm planning to go twice a month- now I'm not seeing the chiropractor I can afford it) and I do yoga once a week. What can I do to cure this? I'm looking for exercises, stretches and the like because I'm fed up of simply masking the symptoms and would like to eliminate the problem. Ones that I can do at work without looking like too much of an idiot would be very good. Which muscles are being affected? Someone mentioned a rotator cuff muscles to me once but I don't know where that is, what's wrong with it or what I can do. I do weights sometimes and I'm pretty strong but my shoulders and abdominals are exceptionally weak. Is the crunching normal? Should I be swinging my neck forward like this? (I never do it backwards as I find it hard to pick my neck up when my head is reclining backwards. I have to swing it round to the side or front.) Finally, what's your view on chiropractors? Do you think they help? Thank you both! Very excited to hear the answers. |

In yoga, there is often discussion about the benefits of exercises that "lengthen the spine". Eg cat's pose, dog's pose. ![]() Meow. I would like to know his thoughts on that, from a physiotherapy point of view. How useful are these exercises, and why? |

That cat pose pictured above HURTS MY BACK/SI joint/hips like a mofo. I was told by yoga people to do that one to help with my back pain, but NO, I don't do that anymore. The only yoga pose I have found helpful for me so far is the cobra/snake pose, done very briefly multiple reps, using back muscles to pull up and hands/arms to guide (NOT TO PUSH). Pushing with your arms in the cobra pose compresses your discs in your spine. Yowch |

Hi guys, still setting the thing up. There are already a few answers on there but he answers chronologically, (some people asked questions outside of the forum). don't bother to click the "meet Phil" page since he has started with the posts rather than writing a bragging session...it'll come later. So for the questions that were from Sandra (one isn't answered yet) follow these links: Swimming question Askphysiophil's Blog Muscle exercise and cardio exercise question Askphysiophil's Blog Questions about sleep and sleeping position Askphysiophil's Blog --------------------------------------------------- All questions will get an answered, and i will post links each time the blog is updated with new answers. Thank you for your patience...and enjoy the read. |

| He will have to go to "File > New" or use the arrow under new, depending on how your word is organized He types his post, he saves it and then later on you (or he, if he feels brave enough) can put "post" or something like that. You have to fill out the website and stuff, but it all speaks pretty much for itself once you fond the blog post thingy... |

I hope that my question will also be answered even though I noticed that here are so many different questions for him already... What to do with my joints since they make a cracking sound whenever I move them? All joints to be honest make that sound. They don't necessarily hurt when they do that sound but it is disturbing whenever I work out or just move. |
