Has anyone ever use Cognitive Therapy to loss and keep the weight off. I think just about everyone knows how to eat right and exercise. So there must be something wrong with people thinking process or just about everyone would be able to maintain there weight. in the past I have lost weight and although I felt a bit better mentally and psychically. I had the thinking that now that I have lost the weight my life would be better but it did not feel better. I would loss motivation and slide back but is not motivation come down to the way you think so that why I'm asking about CBT. I came across this book Amazon.com: The Beck Diet Solution: Train Your Brain to Think Like a Thin Person (9780848732752): Judith S. Beck: Books If any one has any other suggestion on other possible resources. that would be helpful Thanks Scott Last edited by scotthegeek; 09-05-2010 at 09:20 AM. |

I don't think everyone knows how to exercise and eat right. In fact, I would say that almost no one knows how to eat right. There are people who think you need to go: * low carb, * low fat, * vegetarian / vegan / raw, * paleo etc. There are also people who think you need to eat every few hours, eliminate salt, etc. But basically, these are all just TOOLS to reduce your caloric intake while NOT screwing up your hormonal balance. When people go low carb, they tend to eat less calories. When people go low fat, they tend to eat less calories... You need to find an approach that works for YOU. I'm personally having great times following the Leangains approach recommended to me by the forum user Excellent Lodestar. Check it out here: The Leangains Guide | Intermittent fasting diet for fat loss, muscle gain and health But remember, it still is only a tool which helps you eat less, it isn't a magic bullet! |

if I'm thinking that dieting is a lot of hard work and that I think that my life will be so much better when I loss the weight and then I find out that it's not then the problem is not the way I loss weight but how I think about myself and my view of the way the world works. I don't want to keep doing the same things over and over expecting different results that is what you call insanity. What I want to do is change my thinking so that I enjoy losing the weight and feel good about myself in way that being thin and fit is who I am. not thinking of it as something that I have to do. I am a big believer in CBT in general--it helps with negative thinking patterns. I feel that in many cases it can be self-directed by reading a good book. To the degree that you make excuses not to exercise and are an emotional eater, CBT can help you change your thinking and your action. I recommend Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Dummies--you can also get the workbook that is designed to go with this book: Amazon.com: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Dummies (9780470018385): Rob Willson, Rhena Branch: Books It does a great job explaining faulty thinking patterns. Here is an article I wrote on rumination. When I was ruminating a lot--it messed up my sleep which messed up my eating and exercise patterns: Stop Ruminating and Start Swimming |

I did eat right and exercise for a time but then and would slide back because like you also said that when you make positive changes it can bring up a lot of stuff that needs to be processed. I have started yoga that may help with the meditate and hopefully CBT will help with thinking more positively. Scott | |

That's why I started the thread I want to change my thinking about myself and food and I hope that CBT would make a different this time I want permanent weight loss. I'm not a smoker and I have never been but I don't smoke because that not who I am. I hope I don't get flack I just use smoking as an example I want to focus on the thinking process. a smoker have thoughts like if I don't have a cigarette I will die and say non smokers get cancer too why give up the comfort that smoking give me. I know some will say that its an addiction and I know that a part of it but if they don't start thinking like non smoker they will be going around in circles focusing on how to quite should I use the patch I should I go cool turkey and on and on. a non smoker think yuck why put that thing in my mouth I don see how I could get any pleasure from that. Once again I'm not say that we should not talk about how to loss weight but I want this thread to be about CBT and the error in thinking that lead to being over weight or makes me gain the weight back. I know some will say that some people have genetic predisposition for over weight but unless you have some test to prove it, is not that another error in thinking. For example a lot of over weight people say they are big boned I use to say that and believe it but what I found out is that there is a variation in bone size but it doesn't account for obesity and in fact I did some measurement found out that I'm at the high end of being a small boned person. Then I think it's time for some auto-suggestion and visualization. Tell to yourself, multiple times in the day, something like: "I enjoy eating correctly." You can also visualize yourself being leaner and friends complimenting you for how good you look. You might imagine having an easier time going up the stairs or catching the bus. Also it would be probably good to write on paper/PC the reasons why you want to lose weight. Then, whenever you get a temptation, read it. |
