I will be leaving for Sedona ( I am in southern California) on Wednesday for a five day trip by myself. I am considering a fast. I have always wanted to do a fast but I lack the self discipline and have also always been scared about how I would feel at work since I work on my feet and in a fast paced environment. I have heard some people say that a water fast would not be best for someone who has not fasted before. But I am not keen on the idea of juice fasting, is there other fasts or would a water fast be ok? Also should I start a day before or maybe even a day after arriving? So that I can try and gain the most out of my experience in Sedona. I have a lot of healings and new experiences scheduled while I am out there and it will be high temperatures. I am considering doing it while Sedona because I feel that I will be out of my normal environment and situations that usually trigger wanting to eat. Or does it sound like the best thing to do is wait until I am home? |

You can read about fasting on this webpage. At the bottom is a book on fasting by an MD that has fasted tens of thousands of people. You can read that. You have to decide for yourself. I suggest a hour fast first. Try to eat nothing for an hour except water. If you can do that, then you have done the 1 hour fast. Then try the 2 hour fast. Actually you fast every night when you sleep. When you stop the fast it means that you break the fast. The first meal is then break-fast. The above webpage also tells you the odds of dying while fasting. That is in the book by the M.D. also. On the above site it is right before I start talking about juice fasting since it will not happen with juice fasting. Last edited by ginkgo; 07-05-2010 at 02:07 AM. |

Any drastic change from your diet is best to do when you're at home. Raw alone is considered a fast, so you can start with that (assuming you aren't). If you are, then a more simpler raw diet. You can do a liquid fast with smoothies, soups and others. Juice feasting is easier than fasting because you consume more juice and don't feel as hungry. Then juice fast and finally water. Of course there are no rules, but you need to be careful and research as much as you can when attempting a fast. It also is best to do when you won't be doing much other activities until you get use to fasting.

| Depends on the semantics of the word. Technically, starving yourself would be if your body doesn't have enough in it to provide you with what ever you need. The whole point of fasting is, that in theory, you turn your body into a machine that utilizes everything it already has in itself. Whereas starving yourself would usually involve using more energy then your body supply is able to handle, which therefor would put you in starvation mode and your body will start to eat the muscle. I'm sure one of the other guys can explain it better.

Well i think that doing so much fasting is not a good thing.....and our body not only needs food to eat bt also liquid things to drink in order to maintain the temperature of our body....so doing so much fasting as avoiding drinkink liquidy things is not a good thing....

I have a friend who's designed and operated a cleansing program for ten years. She says that fasting to cleanse yourself of toxins is no longer effective due to the quantity and type of toxins in your body these days - many of them never seen before. These toxins are not eliminated with ordinary cleanses and fasting; the fasting only causes them to recirculate in your body and they just settle into another organ. Her program makes special use of toxin-binding nutrients that have the ability to absorb and eliminate toxins.

What's with all this fasting stuff? Humans have a stomach and digestive system. If we didn't require food to survive, why the hell do we have those organs? Surely any form of fasting cannot be good for you.

It seems that the longest lived animals are the ones that go the longest between meals. I'm not saying that we should live lke a python, crocodile or vulture, but there are lots of things that can be learned from animals. Herbivores tend to eat constantly, while carnivores and reptiles can go for weeks and even months without eating. Dave |

MightySunTzu, nice comparison. To the OP, I think the question is why do you want to fast? There are a lot of ideas here on different kinds of fasts but in order to choose something that fits you will depend on why you are doing it. | |
