Well, i'm not quite sure where to put this but it seems like it could start a really interesting conversation: Breast Is Always Best? Mommy's Milk Is Served At NYC Restaurant | Care2 Healthy & Green Living |

Funny to see that the average comment to that article was "yuck!" Why would it be strange (or gross, or wrong) to consume the milk from our own species but not from other mammals? Also interesting is the suspicion from the Health Department. However, I would not support such a product, and probably for greatly different reasons than most. There is a big demand for donated breastmilk - for babies whose mother can't produce enough, for babies with soy or dairy allergies who can't consume formula... I would rather see mothers with excess production donate their milk to babies in need instead of selling it for profit. Actually, I would much rather see the breastmilk donation networks undergo a true development than to see other species bred, impregnated, separated from their kin and hooked to machines to feed our own offsprings. |

That is an interesting article. Animals in the wild eat wild growing foods. The pesticides that this woman eats from non-organic foods will be in her milk. Also the alcohol that she drinks will be in it as well as the medications she takes and the nicotine in the cigarettes that she smokes. If not for the above than I think that her milk will be better than goats milk. More people in the world drink goats milk than cow's milk. The U.S.D.A. says that goats milk is the healthiest milk to drink (that does not include human milk). An adult cow weighs about 1,000 pounds and an adult goat weighs about 150 pounds. Since the drug companies know the above, they will not test their drugs for this. That way they can say that is not known if their drug will end up in the mother's milk. Hmmm weird... my natural response is EWWWWW... BUT I don't know why it should be? Why is breast milk cheese any more eww than cow's milk cheese?? Why do people respond to it in a negative way when it's probably healthier than the animal alternative? Mind you, I think all milk should really be for baby animals and humans, and not for adults anyway |

yes humans are led to believe that you can't be healthy without milk all your life. aside from fill in animal moms...we are the only ones that drink the milk of another species. it is supposed to be "healthy"... we pasturize it and then yet very often along with the fortification of vitamins there are probably some left over antibiotics and hormones that go along with factory farming.... |

This shows how dangerous "conditioning" can be. Somehow people are disgusted by the thought of drinking human milk but are quite happy consuming hormone-filled, antibiotic-infected, slimy tasting cow's milk that leaves white gooey gunk on their tongue. That said, I also think, let's leave milk to the babies. You are an adult for a reason, you don't need milk. Last edited by MidasGirl; 03-24-2010 at 02:16 PM. |

What a great article! It's interesting to read people's reaction. As someone who used to breastfeed (yes, for years, until my daughter was 4) and drinks other creatures' milk I had a mixed reaction as well. Mainly because I tasted my own milk and found that it tasted really, really sweet in an off-putting way, but maybe I was just getting a lot of fore-milk which tends to have more sugar. Perhaps it is conditioning, but I think cow and goat's milk tastes better. And there's something really personal and intimate about drinking another woman's bodily fluids. I think people's reaction simply reflect their attitude towards humans versus animals. |

I don't think human milk is disgusting, i think formula is disgusting. However I would not be willing to taste some other woman's boobie juice. I find the idea inappropriate... Breastmilk is the best thing in the world...for babies (and toddlers/children i guess... depending if you are one of those ABA people |

i don't think it is disgusting either. i have no desire to taste it. i think women who donate for babies are great. it doesn't bother me if women do it discreetly in public...though to be honest, i might be a little uncomfortable seeing a child of a certain age doing it...and i admit, that is MY problem |

Well I agree that it's not at all disgusting for babies to drink breast milk. But the thought of eating cheese made out of another woman's breast milk just makes me shudder... Mind you, I no longer drink the milk of any animal! But before, yeah, it was normal to drink milk from a cow (which if you think about it is really really abnormal) but I wouldn't touch another woman's breast milk. So... that's weird... human conditioning is really really weird, if you think about it! |
