Default Best stuff to eat first thing in the morning...

I'm getting pretty dialed in on the nutrition front but still haven't settled on what I want to eat when I wake up in the morning. In the past I've tried a number of things including pineapple, oatmeal, etc. For a while I was doing only fruit but spiking the ol' GI first thing in the day is probably not wise. A buddy recently suggested starting the day with some wild salmon. I think Tony Robbins suggested starting the day with broccoli. I believe Steve said he starts the day with an organic fuji apple. So it's a bit of controversial subject.

Anyone looked into this or have any thoughts?

Eggs and non-skim milk. They'll give you fats to last you for the rest of the day. Try eggs instead of cereal w/ skim, and you'll definitely feel better.

I always have a banana and a glass of water. Sustainable energy that keeps me going till my breakfast at 8.00. And it's slow release as well so I feel quite alive for a long while.

I eat oatmeal (with cinammon, nutmeg and a dollop of maple syrup) because it keeps me full and gives me energy til midday. Sometimes I take a piece of fruit mid morning.

Salmon sounds like a great idea, too. Perhaps some salmon on a slice of whole grain bread with green tea and juice or fruit.

I'm pretty much dairy-free these days but eggs may make sense (still trying to figure out whether eggs are healthy or not but I'll leave that for a separate post). My body tends to enjoy getting some healthy fats first thing in the morning which is why salmon is appealing but it's a little more work to prepare. Oatmeal is easy and definitely provides a lot of lasting energy. Hmmm...

Anthony Robbins says the best thing to eat in the morning is vegetables. I would like to try but I can't. Eating carrots when I wake up ?

I think carrots would actually not be very good to eat first thing in the morning because they are relatively high in sugar. I think Tony recommends broccoli but that's even tougher to imagine eating than carrots.

I've been making killer salads lately. One of those first thing in the morning might be good and easy (if I prepared it the night before).

a half liter of water,
rice protein, a piece of whole fruit, and 10 raw almonds.

(I like nutribiotic berry rice protein the best)

or substitute a balanced vegan green meal for the rice protein, like ultimate meal.

somewhere in ayurveda or meal timing literature, it says that as a carbohydrate source, it's best to have fruit in your breakfast, and vegetables in your lunch and dinner, for optimimal digestion-- I like this balance.

I used to think a big breakfast (well, at least an egg and a piece of toast) was necessary to keep me going, but I have definitely changed my mind.
Also, since I stopped eating eggs a lot of my old options dried up.

In graduate school I ate rice and corn (yummy) every morning and it kept me going until lunch.

I just read a great book/cookbook re raw food diets and the authors suggested eating only nuts and fruit before noon.

I realized that I have been doing this for some time now, and it works well. I eat some grapes and some cashews every morning. I am not full, but it is enough to keep me going until lunch. I have found that I was eating more than was necessary for a long time.

I agree with that Nala.

Since many years I am drinking some water in the morning (good for digestion) and eating only fruits in the morning (until noon) like grapes, pea, pineapple, cherrys, whatever or i make a fruit shake with banana, orange, apple and water (sometimes with other fruits like lemon, kiwi, peach, pineapple but always with banana ...).

I absolutely love that and it gives me lots of energy.

PS: I think that not everything fitting for everybody and not everytime.
Our body needs different things at different times.
You have to listen to your appetite, what you feel like eating eat and check how you feel after eating it. Choose your food intuitive.

Right, I should add that I tend to drink a lot of water during the day ... and I make sure to have two big glasses when I get up in the morning.

No matter whether you are trying to lose weight, gain weight or anything in between, you need at least 50 grams a day of carbohydrates for normal brain function and oatmeal is an ideal complex carbohydrate. It has a low rating on the Glysemic Index and is a slow release form of energy food. It is also a great source of fibre to keep you regular and is the ideal breakfast food.

A grainy form of non toasted muesli is also good with skim milk. Some light protein like eggs would complement the oats or muesli just fine.

My usual breakfast these days:

- 2 pieces of wheat toast with almond, cashew, walnut (expensive, though), or peanut butter
- a banana
- a glass of orange juice...or two

Sometimes I pour some Optimum Power Cereal onto the "buttered" toast to make a sandwich. I used to eat that cereal for the fiber, but now that I am on a vegan diet, I do it for the B12.
