Tasaio is an unknown quantity at this point
Default Becel (margerine) -- good or bad?

Becel is a type of margerine, and my main topping for bread.

I always felt guilty about using it, because

(a) it contains whey powder, so it's non-vegan
(b) I was always told that it was the most hydrogenated oil you could find
(c) I've been told it contains nothing good in it

In the case of (a), is whey powder as bad as dairy products? My rye bread also contains it. I'm also confused, because I know several vegans who use it.

For (b), I've just read "non-hydrogenated" on the side of our Becel package.

And disputing (c) is the claim on the package that Becel contains Omega-3 and Omega-6 polyunsaturated fats...which I understand is good.

In any case, I consume a lot of Becel. How healthy is it compared to, say, olive oil, soy cheese, and natural peanut butter?

If it's poison in disguise, then please let me know!

Found this Becel FAQ:
http://www.becelcanada.com/product_faqs.asp

One notable note:
Quote:
Q
Why is the "Source of Omega-3 polyunsaturates" claim not on Becel Light or RSF?
A
To make the claim "Source of Omega-3 polyunsaturates", a product must have at least 0.3 grams of Omega-3 polyunsaturated fat per serving. Becel Regular, Becel Salt Free, Becel with Bertolli Olive Oil and Becel Oil all have at least 0.4 grams of Omega-3 polyunsaturated fat per serving and can therefore display the claim. However, Becel Light and RSF are reduced in overall fat and so the amount of Omega-3 polyunsaturated fat is also reduced. As a result these varieties do not meet the required 0.3 grams of Omega-3 polyunsaturated fat per serving and can therefore not make the claim. Becel Light has 50% fewer calories and 50% less fat than Becel Regular and Becel RSF has 67% less fat than Becel Regular.
0.4 g / serving is not a significant amount out of 7.6 g / serving total fat. Omega 3 to omega 6 ratio should optimally be around 1:1 or 1:2.

I'm a soy doubter and I'm also a believer that the less processed a food is, the better. I would personally go with olive oil or peanut butter if I were you.
