Hello, Here are some benifits of vitamin D prateek Vitamin D is an important part of a healthy diet. New benefits of this vitamin are being discovered every day, but many people still do not receive enough vitamin D to reap the wonderful benefits it can provide to their health. Vitamin D is most famous for its contribution to joint and bone health by helping the body absorb calcium. It has been shown that people who take in enough vitamin D are less likely to suffer from osteoporosis and joint pain. This vitamin can also slow the affects of arthritis and lessen back pain in many individuals. Studies have shown that vitamin D can also prevent certain types of cancer. Vitamin D is one of the only vitamins produced naturally by the body. However, in order for the body to produce vitamin D, it has to be exposed to an adequate amount of sunlight. Generally, an hour per week is more than enough, but surprisingly, many people are still not exposed to enough sun to produce beneficial amounts of vitamin D. Also, studies have shown that as we age, we tend to produce less vitamin D even with adequate sun exposure. These are the primary reasons why many adults have to monitor their diets to make sure they are taking in enough vitamin D. Milk is often fortified with vitamin D, and you can also find good amounts of vitamin D in certain kinds of fish that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Cod liver oil is an herbal supplement that is rich in vitamin D. Vitamin D supplements are also widely available. While it is important to have enough vitamin D in your diet, it is possible to take in too much vitamin D. This often happens when a person receives a good amount of sun exposure and consumes many foods that contain moderate amounts of vitamin D, but also continues to take a vitamin D supplement. For this reason, it is important to discuss with your doctor whether or not you require a vitamin D supplement as part of your diet. Thank you!! |

not a doctor, but work for one that has done some fairly extensive research of vit d treatment. one would have to basically get 10 min of sunshine a day, pretty much buck naked to get the amt. of vit d needed. the increased fear of skin cancer and use of sun blocks has added to the problem.) not so much a vit. as a type of hormone. very difficult to get too much of it. an rx form of vit d3 (ergocalciferol) can be rx'd in 50,000 unit doses per wk x 8 wks to bump up a really low level to start...then the over the counter form of d3 (cholecalciferol) can be taken daily in 2,000 units per day and bumped up in 2,000 units as needed. i currently take approx 6,000 units per day. i have osteoporosis and took forteo injections for 2 yrs with little improvement and with the help of a forteo rep and the rheumatologist we became enlightened on the connection of vit d (i was deficient) and calcium absorption. my physician (family practice) immediately started screening pts for this deficiency and found out most of them are and are now on supplemental vit d3. it is probably one of the simplest health issues to discover and treat. thanks for the thread! |

What is a hormone? A substance created by an organ that is used by other organs. What organ is the largest organ of the body and creates non-vitamin D? The skin. How do you make a hormone? Don't pay her (whore moan). Actually scientists are now saying that people need lifeguard amounts of vitamin D to prevent cancer and for optimal health. Lifeguards are mostly naked in the sun all day long. Here is the video YouTube - Vitamin D Prevents Cancer: Is It True? about it if you want to understand the latest research on non-vitamin D.

| It makes sense because humans evolved standing out in the sun most of the time. Another thing I read was that sunblock blocks production of vitamin D. I have not used sunblock in a long time and I do not believe the advertisements that say we need to wear a shirt, hat and sunblock to be protected from the obviously damaging sun.

it is so weird....the patients in the practice i work for make such a big deal about remembering or having to take the vit d or act like it is no big deal if they DON'T take it. relatively inexpensive tiny little gel caps...geeze! |

I have used the vitamin D cure for the cold on 3 different subjects with great results each time. The dose is 2,000IU per kilogram of body weight (about 1,000IU per pound). For a 150-lb individual, this means 150,000IU — 36 capsules of 5,000IU each. Take this once a day for 3 straight days. Don't worry about toxicity — you'd have to keep this up for a month or more. My friends and my 11-yr. old wiped out their cold symptoms using this treatment. I have tried every natural remedy I know of before, and nothing has worked like vitamin D. | I've seen him around town and he is not actually butt naked he wears tightie whities, boots and a hat. Not enough for public indecency summons but I really don't know how he does it in freezing cold weather. I would love to know his secret.

I don't really care for taking many pills, but there are other forms of supplementation available, such as Biotics Research - Bio-D-Mulsion Forte. It has ~750 drops, with each being 2000 IU, and costs ~$20 with shipping on Amazon.

I don't know if it is related or not, but I have spent much more time out in the sun this year that in the past. I see to be much healthier. I have yet to really get sick, other than a couple days spread out where I didn't feel great. My wife was sick for a month, and I didn't catch it from her. I credit Vitamin D with my ability to stay well. Maybe I'm just wanting an excuse to be out in the sun more. |

I tried Vitamin D when I had a cold and I think it helped it clear up, but I took 2000 IU a day total, not 2000 per kg! That sounds really high. I would do some research before trying that. FYI it's the middle of winter here and I am stuck inside most of the day so I know I'm getting adequate sunlight/ outside time. |

Hi Stanmrak. This is some really compelling stuff. Can this work in any stage of the cold, or?... Could it be that if it was hit very early, a much smaller dosage could knock it out? Any idea how well this would work with a major flu? I'll admit the dosage seems dangerously high, but i am willing to keep an open mind. Thanks!

Information on the Vitamin D cure for colds can be found at the Vitamin D Council website: Vitamin D Newsletter May 2009 | H1N1 Flu and Vitamin D The website has the most comprehensive data on vitamin D. Toxicity of Vitamin D3 has been greatly exaggerated by the fear-mongers at BigPharma and the FDA. |

| Vitamin D Council | Understanding Vitamin D Cholecalciferol This the definitive website for info! Vitamin D is actually a 'steroid prohormone' that helps athletic performance, among its vast benefits. I take it daily, especially when I can't get in the sun, and consider it as essential as food! People freak out that I stay in the sun for hours with no sunscreen, just cold-pressed unrefined coconut oil as a skin conditioner, and I have way better skin than they do even at my age! |

See the Vitamin D Council website--the high IU numbers make it sound like a lot. That's a myth. 50,000 IU is only a tiny microgram-level of D! It would take millions of IUs to be toxic.

Just make sure you take enough - 1,000IU of D3 for every pound of body weight for 3 mornings in a row. I was told that taking D in the evening may disrupt your circadian cycle and make it harder to sleep, but i dunno. Last edited by stanmrak; 01-13-2010 at 04:15 PM.
