Dairy products can be worse for your cardiovascular health than many meats. Reduce your use of things made out of milk and eggs.

Watch this free online video. It will teach you how to improve your cardiovascular health and it isn't selling anything:

Default high cholesterol

hi everyone-well i have heart attacks and deaths on both sides of my family.my granny on my moms side had her 1st heart attack at 38 and my uncle at 34.my dad had a triple by pass at 49 and died at 59.mom passes when she was 52.so i got sick and got heavier and heavier and got to 245 and had so much pain(i am 5 foot 4) and a granny of 7.my blood pressure was 150/100 and put on lipitor and on arthrits meds.i had to move from our big house to a flat,no stairs mobile home.i had to change my ways.i was threatened with diabetes medication. the dr. said no sugar,no salt and low fat. i did what u are-went to my old ways.the hippy ways-turned vegetarian, then vegan, then on the new yr.-i went raw .raw foodist.i have lost 60 pounds since and off all meds. i feel really good like a young gal.the thing about the raw foodismn is there is alot of nuts in all the recipes so those u have to go easy on.thats sort of extreme-my answer but it sure worked for me.taylor2

Sorry about how things have turned out. The yoga and swimming sound like really refreshing options. Just be consistent. About 3 or 4 days a week. I always put a greater preference over exercise than diet. As long as diet is reasonable, exercise will take care of the rest. By exercise, I mean something you're improving at over time not just moving about. Time yourself during your swims. Get faster every week. Exercise won't be as effective if you're not working harder over time.

A question for taylor2, how do you get your protein?

Question high cholesterol

thanks for ur advice, will do my best, taking baby steps...

have had a big shock that's why i got out of the relationship.. he was arrested for abusing 2 boys we used to mind... am so mad that i couldn't see it.. i was with him 17 yrs..god help me.. and we nevr had kids of our own.. Plus we were both abused as kids and he KNOWSS the effects. He is going to court on 6 march for pleading direction (if he'll plead guilty or not). I am a witness of the prosecuiton as looking back i see that he had plenty of opps to do what I believe he did (becos basically I believe those boys, kids dont lie).. and what is most upsetting is he did have counselling for a couple of years about his abuse. I did too at the same time, and was in a survivors group too for a while.

And, am smoking again after giving it up for 8 yrs... not good i know.. and I am on antidepressants and valium (only 2mg when i need it ..)

I do believe in herbal medicine and talking therapy - am getting some counselling in next 2 wks.. and once I can get my head straight, i will want to come off the antideps...

I think all the stress has caused the depression etc.

I am a psychic medium but not working at the mo. Also trained in reflexology and want to study regressin therapy next. Have a lot of plans. dont think i'll ever trust a man again...

am finding this site incredible and inspirational..

Organic egg I would suggest avoid or limit all non-fermented soy product .

Thyroid and Soy

If you eat once a week / bi week especially with seafood, i believe it wouldnt harm that much.

Eat the right fat and cholesterol to improve your cholesterol profile. ( Increase HDL and reduce LDL ). Avoid sugar, limit refined starchy carbohydrate to reduce trygyceride level.

Quote:
The difference in organic and non-organic animal foods is significant. As an example, let’s look at the difference between organic and non-organic eggs. We function best when we eat an equal balance of two fatty acids: omega-6 and omega-3. Having too much omega-6 and too little omega-3 leads to numerous health problems, including generalized inflammation, high blood pressure, depressed immune function, weight gain, an irritated intestinal tract, and a tendency to form blood clots. An organic egg, one that comes from a hen allowed to eat green plants and insects, contains an optimal ratio of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids of 1:1. A commercial supermarket egg from a hen that is fed mainly grain in a factory-farm environment has a ratio closer to 15 or 20:1.

Best wishes of luck

Janlee,

Sometimes avoiding flesh foods, milk foods, and eggs is not enough. Sometimes you need to also avoid transfats( Trans Fats 101 - Feature Story - University of Maryland Medicine ) and keep your total fat intake fairly low.

Dr. Dean Ornish's program has been scientifically and clinically proven to reverse heart disease. You may want to get his book for some general advice.

If that doesn't work please be aware that there are people who genetically have low cholesterol or high cholesterol no matter what they do.

In that case you may want to see a cardiologist to see if it is wise to go on medication.

Cholesterol skeptic : Cooked vegetable oil : the potential culprit

Low HDL link to cancer

Quote:
Cholesterol was the dominant topic of the two-day event, as well as the subject of the opening lecture provocatively entitled, "High Cholesterol Protects Against Disease." Uffe Ravnskov, MD, PhD, a Danish physician who has published many critical papers about the purported association between cholesterol and cardiovascular disease, led off with a slide showing the results of all the major clinical trials that attempted to prove that lowering cholesterol in healthy but high-risk people would reduce their death rate from heart disease. "The reduced rates of cardiovascular mortality were small for men and non-existent for women," said Dr. Ravnskov, who is the author of The Cholesterol Myths, a paperback that refutes the theory that cholesterol in our food and in our blood causes heart disease.

These cholesterol trials also looked at total mortality, that is, the deaths from all causes, and found little difference between the study participants who tried to lower their cholesterol and those who did not. In other words, some clinical trials showed that the heart disease death rates were, in fact, lower among men who had reduced their cholesterol levels. But this benefit was offset by a higher rate of deaths from other causes.
Quote:
When studies failed to prove that lowering cholesterol made any lifesaving difference, researchers forged ahead with more multi-million dollar clinical trials. Not until the statin drugs (Lipitor, Mevacor, Zocor, Lescol, Crestor, Advicor) came along did cholesterol-lowering finally prove to be lifesaving to high-risk but healthy people. Whether this benefit might actually be due to the anti-inflammatory effects of statins has been the topic of controversy ever since.

Quote:
As with several of the speakers who would follow him, Dr. Ravnskov is unimpressed with the reduction in heart disease mortality shown for the statin drugs "When you look at the CARE trial [Cholesterol And Recurrent Events], Pravachol did show a small benefit--after five years 5.7% had died from heart disease in the [untreated] control group, compared to only 4.6% in the treatment group, but [this benefit] was not dose related." he said, referring to the expectation that the more a person lowers his or her* cholesterol, the less likely a heart-related death. Also, the people taking Pravachol had a few more deaths from other causes. Dr. Ravnskov managed to push the envelope further by making a case for high cholesterol as a protective against cancer. He showed slides listing published studies that found higher rates of infectious disease among hospitalized people with low cholesterol levels. Also, several studies found higher cancer rates in people with low cholesterol levels.

Women told to take statin drugs should be aware of this risk found in the CARE trial: There were 12 cases of breast cancer in the women taking Pravachol, compared with only one case in the untreated (control) group. Statin drug proponents dismissed this worrisome finding as a fluke, said Dr. Ravnskov, because the control group would be expected to have had more than one case of breast cancer.
Quote:
Dr. Enig is a leading spokesperson for the Weston A. Price Foundation, which sponsored this conference. The foundation is named for a dentist who, beginning in the 1930s, studied the dentition of healthy isolated people untouched by Western civilization. He found that they inevitably had great bone structure and beautiful straight teeth.

Primitive diets were nutrient dense, with four times the calcium and mineral and ten times the level of fat-soluble vitamins, compared to the modern American diet. Dr. Price continued to study these isolated people as Western foods were introduced. The white flour, sugar, devitalized oils, etc., gradually displaced the traditional foods, such as organ meats, fish eggs, and butter from pasture-fed cows. Changes in diet led to rampant tooth decay; narrowing of the face that brought on a susceptibility to sinus infections; narrowing of the pelvis that led to childbirth difficulties; and behavioral problems. Sally Fallon, president of the tax-exempt foundation, told the conference that its goal is to disseminate the research of this "nutrition pioneer. According to the information packet supplied to the conference attendees, the Weston A. Price Foundation takes no food industry funding.
The article implies that we still need good cholesterol for optimal health, not the damaged one from processed food, trans fat, processed/refined caborhydrate and cooked vegetable oil that would cause us heart problem.
