Has anybody suffered from low thyroid function and managed to restore thyroid function with alternative methods? I am not managing very well with synthetic thyroxine for a variety of reasons. I am barely taking any at all now and beginning to regress back to fatigue, apathy and depression. Whole thyroid is an option but I'd still rather do it naturally but don't know if it's possible or if I can last without serious side effects before I see an improvement trying natural methods such as taking kelp, selenium, zinc etc.

The iodine added to salt is not a food. It is suggested that you always get your vitamins and minerals from food. They are not the same when you get it from a chemical. Also there may be other nutrients required besides iodine. So I suggest eating a food. Eat the sea vegetable or seaweed, kelp. It is a food and has lots of iodine. It is also an herb, vegetable and a botanical. But watch out for the side effects. It is a food but that is what you call other effects of drugs. So its side effects include helping overweight people to lose weight and anti-aging. But that may be due to helping the thyroid. There are other health benefits like protecting you from breast cancer. And men can get breast cancer. Men do not have breasts but they do have a breast. Women have 2 breasts and they also have a breast. The islands of Okinawa and Japan are the 2 countries with the longest living people in the world. Since they are surrounded by sea and also they have one-third the population of the U.S. on a tiny island, they get lots of food from the sea. For example sushi has seaweed and may have fish. Vegetables from the sea are loaded with trace minerals that are missing in the soil. Can you give me one example? One example is iodine. Everyone should eat kelp for health. See this webpage about the health benefits of kelp. Selenium and zinc are not foods. |

Ginko is pretty much right. I would suggest going on a very strict 30-day trial of all organic foods, with very low sodium, don't ADD salt to anything, and make sure that your meals are varied in color. There's a lot of speculation as to how much our "food" that we eat affects us on a cellular level that lead to very well known and hazard medical conditions. Take care and good luck. |

You do not list what country you are in. Many fluoridate the water. This can cause thyroid problems according to this video, so purify your water and make green or white tea with it.

Oops! Forgot to mention that I have been gluten free for over 6 months now. Unfortunately discovered that I must have been gluten intolerant all my life which accounts for some of the malabsorption problem. I learnt that it can take anything from 2 to 10 years for the gut to heal after such a long exposure. I'm facing an uphill battle. The other malabsorption comes from pancreatic insufficiency, seemingly caused by gluten intolerance, now that I've done the research and have all the facts. I get kind of angry to think that doctors that I pay to look after me are totally ignorant of the facts. However, I may be down, but not out! |

That person is me. Just kidding. It is you so you need to become your own physician. Hippocrates said "Physician heal thyself." You do not need to be an expert in computer repair. If it breaks down, buy a new one. Here is a site on free natural cures. It helps you to help yourself and figure out what is wrong and fix it. I bought a used rebuilt computer for $70 when a woman was moving and it has worked perfectly for half a year, with no problems so far. A relative rebuilt it for her and so it was probably made with better parts than when originally made. But if your body breaks down, you cannot buy a new one and you may die. So you should become an expert on your health. Hippocrates said "Ginkgo, help people to heal themselves." | |

I'm currently investigating whether I might have hypothyroidism. There are at least 7 blood tests used to diagnose this condition, but NONE of them are conclusive on their own. Most doctors are clueless about proper treatment; they'll prescribe Synthroid across the board, regardless of your symptoms. The most reliable test might be taking your body temperature immediately upon awakening in the morning - before you even get up. Do this several days in a row; not during your menstrual cycle if you're a woman. If your temperature is consistently below 97.8F, you probably have at least an under-functioning thyroid. The most common cause may be Hashimoto's, a auto-immune disease exacerbated by gluten intolerance. Hashimoto's attacks the thyroid gland. Exposure to radiation and environmental toxins are also prime suspects. Avoid polyunsaturated fats, especially soy products of any kind. Certain vegetables like raw broccoli and cabbage should be avoided as well. Thyroid hormones are a last resort. Once you start on hormones, you're on them for life - even the natural kind. And you may still have symptoms because they don't treat the underlying condition. Fluoride in water is a problem. Environmental pollutants and hormone-like chemicals in non organic produce also contribute to thyroid problems. Exercise promotes thyroid function. I have read testimonials of people who cured themselves by eating coconut oil. Iodine supplements may help IF YOU DON'T HAVE HASHIMOTO'S. If you do, iodine will make it worse. It takes a thyroid antibody blood test to detect Hashimoto's. Don't take iodine on your own. Seaweed is a good source of iodine, but about half of the seaweed products on the shelf are contaminated with bromine, which negates the iodine. I'd stick to organic seaweed products.
