I try to eat mostly organic food and in addition, I try to limit chemicals in my home. I use a steam mop instead of fragrances for the floor, vinegar instead of pledge and other cleaning products, beeswax candles, and plants/fresh air to circulate air in my home (instead of artificial cover ups like Glade). My question is: Anyone else concerned with chemicals from cleaning products or is it too OCD? I have done some research of chemicals from cleaning products and there is correlation between them and cancers. I would like to hear others who go "green" and any tips for limiting chemicals. |

I don't think it's OCD at all, you are totally right for being concerned about the chemicals in your house. Especially for people with asthma and allergies, I think reducing the chemicals would help. We put so many things in the indoor air we breathe, if you think about all the spray air fresheners, plug-ins, carpet deodorizers, furniture sprays, window cleaners, etc. I have to admit I am still guilty of using chemicals myself, even if I am concerned about them. That being said, some tips: - Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap - according to the label, you can use it for almost anything, washing dishes, clothes, moping floors, hand soap, shampoo, body wash etc. - essential oils - they are a great way to keep your house smelling fresh. They are cheaper than any artificial freshener and I think they smell better. I use at the moment orange, lemon, lime, jasmine and eucalyptus, and I put them in a water spray bottle and keep it handy, also in a candle burner, and my humidifier. - baking soda - you can use it to freshen your fridge, your pet's litter box, your carpet, you can use it for cleaning, etc. It's very versatile and can substitute many chemicals we use in our homes. |

I never use any chemical cleaners and I totally disagree with plug ins, air fresheners, caustic oven cleaners, hand sanitizers etc. They are indeed harmful to health and the environment and I simply can't understand why people can't see that.
