background: I've been completely raw for 5 days now (experimenting, not yet sure if 100% raw is good for me or not). I'm going to do it for 30 days before deciding one way or the other. My problem is, I don't have a right strategy. I'm eating all the raw food I can get near my home, but am sure that is not enough. I'd like to try super foods, tried ordering online, its way toooooooo expensive for my wallet. I'd especially like to try goji berries and cacao. What other super foods are easily available and aren't that expensive? Where can I get them - websites or shop names, if it is in the NY/NJ/CT area? |

Most are going to be expensive. Here are a hundred of them maybe you can find one that is not too expensive. The idea is to get the biggest benefit for the least money. I was watching a video of a woman in Texas who forages (gatherer but not hunter) in Texas for raw food. She found a field with 22 persimmon trees loaded with this fruit and some reishi mushrooms. They are free for the taking. See How Wild Persimmon Foraging Can Teach Us About Abundance - RoseGoddessBliss.com Crunchy sprouts are super healthy but cost like $2. Of course how expensive something is, is not just cost. It is cost divided by amount. My area is loaded with pokeweed berries now. They are poisonous to mammals raw, but the Declaration of Independence was written in the juice from them. Last edited by ginkgo; 10-16-2009 at 01:10 PM. |

I know that one of the most nutritious food sources you can get, on the planet, are Chlorella and Spirulina. Google this stuff; there's loads of information about them. They are really nutrient-dense and will help you on the raw food diet. Good luck !

gingko: thank you for the advice. is there no place where I can get some cheap super food, if not many (or all)? like say cocoa or goji berries etc. I went to the sites of raw food "gurus", they are all expensive. Also from Amazon, how can we be sure that it is organic/raw etc? |

Amazon does not make those foods. They get them from the other companies so check the literature of the company that makes it. Amazon can sell the stuff for a discount because of their buying power. They give the companies a choice. Sell it to us for less to resell or do not sell it at all. Amazon actually sells books for 1 cents (a penny) each. |

I'm with james on this one. Why do you feel the need to buy all sorts of expensive "superfoods"? If you have a ton of extra money around, sure why not, but otherwise your local grocery store has all the super foods that you need. Spinich, olive oil, coconut oil, hemp seeds, walnuts, apples, etc. They all have vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, etc. If you can't get it locally don't worry about it. Humans are meant to eat what nature provides around them. If you feel you must buy exotic food items just do a google serach, but otherwise just get your nutrition from local sources if possible. I tried the raw thing, didn't do well on it, but I wish you luck, and the best anyways.

Try adding a few spices to your foods. Cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, oregano, basil are all rich in antioxidants. A teaspoon of cinnamon, in fact, has more antioxidants than a half-cup of blueberries, one of the richest antioxidant fruits. Organic prunes are another inexpensive option. If you can only afford one superfood, I'd suggest chlorella or spirulina. I buy bulk chlorella powder and use a tablespoon a day in my smoothies — nutritionally equivalent to 3 full servings of dark green leafy vegetables. The cost comes out to about 50 cents a day. Another reason why superfoods are a good idea? Superfoods (such as chlorella, spirulina, mangosteen, goji or acai berries and others) often have unique nutritional properties not found in any conventional fruits and vegetables, so they have additional benefits that you won't get any other way.
