Default Do You Know Where Red Food Dye comes from?!

I'm talking about the "all-natural" kind - it's made out of ground up, South American beetles !! The term used is "dolomite" or "calamite", or something that doesn't sound like "beetlegutsite" ! Eeww. On the plus side, it is all natural and they weren't lyin' about that part.

Yup, E120 is made of cochineals. But there are also mineral-based (like E129. Allura Red AC) or plant-based (like E162, beet based) red dyes. They have different shades and different reactions to heat, though.

I believe there is or was a red dye for food which was made from coal. I'm not sure if it is still in use.

Yes, I have heard it's called carmine. It's used in some cosmetics.
