Default Are acorns edible to human beings?

Are acorns edible to human beings? I have recently found some acorns in the woods and was wondering if they are edible. If they are, how does one eat them? A lot of the acorns that I found are green in color though, and only a couple of them were brown with a cap on the top.

Also, are ferns edible? I have a lot of ferns in my area and was wondering if I could consume them. I know that a guidebook for the types of edible foods in nature (in my area) would help.

fiddleheads come from a particular fern in Northern New England..only around in the early spring... sooo good.. Acorns are edible I believe, but not necessarily so tasty.. My favorite way of eating acorns is by eating serano ham.. the pigs are finished off with acorns... There really is nothing quite like it..

I remember reading that acorns were a major part of the diet in Italy during the middle ages for the people on the bottom of the social economic scale such as those who toiled in the field and were for all practical purposes the property of the land owners.

I also recall the article indicated that the diet high in acorns were psycho active which tended to keep the acorn eater is an altered state and easier to for the owners to keep them from being even more sullen and resistant to their lot in life.

According to Wiki. acorns are toxic to horses but not humans. Humans eat them. Acorn - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I myself do not know. I never ate one. Koreans eat acorn noodles daily. Americans make noodles out of wheat and eat way too much wheat like in sandwiches, pasta, French toast, fried chicken, bread, waffles, pizza, crackers, cookies, cakes and on and on. The acorns from white oaks are better to eat than those of red oaks. See above link. "Storage of acorns permitted Native American women to process acorns when convenient, particularly during winter months when other resources were scarce."

I seem to remember my parents saying that ground roasted acorns where used during the 2nd World War as a coffee substitute.
