not just egg whites, but the entire egg with the yolk. my mother holds this conception that more than one egg a day is bad for you due to cholesterol. i currently eat two boiled eggs per day (white and yolk), but would like to bump this up in trying to increase sources of protein. what's the limit one can go before it gets unhealthy? |

I read somewhere that it would take 500 eggs to increase the cholesterol level by one point.. Not going to say I completely agree with that number...But what i will say is I eat between 2-6 eggs a day.. nearly everyday.. Total Cholesterol=197. It really depends on your genetics more than anything. My system can process eggs well.. some folks generate too much or cannot handle putting any more into their system.

I think you could eat unlimited amounts of eggs. I aim for three to six every day. This thread reminds me of that elderly man who compulsively ate 25 eggs every day for at least 15 years, and had "normal" cholesterol. Enjoy Eating Eggs? According to this article, old-time bodybuilders like Vince Gironda and Arthur Saxon ate lots of eggs to help build muscle: Splendid Specimens: The History of Nutrition in Bodybuilding |

I consume approximately 2 dozen eggs per week! It’s well known that eggs contain high amounts of lutein and zeaxanthin (carotenoids) that decrease the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration. Studies of individuals with the highest intakes of lutein and zeaxanthin had a 43 percent less chance of developing macular degeneration. The nutrients in eggs also protect the macula by absorbing harmful blue light from the sun’s rays. Not exactly eye related, but egg consumption also neutralizes free radicals, the end products of metabolism that are believed to cause aging. Might I also add that eggs are one of the best foods that can help to prevent Alzheimer’s. Eggs provide choline, the yellow fatty substance found in the egg’s yolk which helps to repair damaged brain tissue. They also are a good source of iron, zinc, vitamin B12 and other major vitamin B groups such as B2. Enjoy your eggs. Bo |

Eat all the eggs you want. 1) It won't do anything for your cholesterol levels. (It might even lower them, since carbs cause bad blood lipid values, while dietary cholesterol has very little impact -Try it.) 2) And even if it did, the entire idea that high cholesterol causes heart disease is nonsense. Read "The Cholesterol Myths" (or Good Calories Bad Calories) for someone who really goes through all the actual studies and shows right there in the primary literature (the scientific papers themselves) how the entire notion is without any scientific basis. |

I have a feeling that the "eggs are bad for ya" idea is a myth. But I don't know the science involved in proving or disproving that. However, I can almost guarantee you that eggs are better than most of the high-carbohydrate crap that people eat all the time, like bread and pasta. |

thanks. those of you suggesting that its entirely safe and that eggs are bad is a myth, i know the phrase "eat all the eggs you want" has been thrown out there, but at a conservative estimate, what is the upper daily limit you would put, just to stay on the safe side. i am looking to eat 4 per day. |

I would do a 30 day trial for increasing egg intake to 4 per day and continously measure the results of tests like cholesterol, blood pressure, etc. If it doesn't make a difference, then you'll get your answer (although I would continue to take note of those things at least on a weekly basis for up to 2 years).

I wish I had a "before" to compare it to, but after eating 12-18 raw whole eggs per day in shakes (an easy way of getting calories on a raw diet) for several months and getting curious what my cholesterol was, I had it checked: HDL: 60 LDL: 57 VLDL: 13 Last edited by openeyes; 09-18-2009 at 04:39 PM. |

When I saw your title, I thought you were asking how many eggs one can eat in a day, in the "Cool Hand Luke" sense. In that case, the answer is 50. I'm inspired by recent events around here and also be a gnawing suspicion that eggs might not be my best choice to go on a detox, giving them up (among other things) for seven days (or maybe more) and reintroducing them later if it's appropriate, and see what happens. I've read that many people have undiscovered allergies or sensitivities to eggs. (Dr. Mark Hyman, The UltraMind Solution, etc.) |

Interesting thread! I always thought (probably based on something I once heard, or read) that eating more than two eggs per day on average might not be a good idea. I'd say I usually eat about 4-6 boiled eggs a week. I think I could eat a few more than |

There is the issue of allergies, though. If you are allergic to eggs, well, I guess you'll notice it at 25/day. On the nazi-thing: This is ridiculous. How many sentient beings do you kill by eating organic free-range eggs? Eggs are not alive. By that logic, since not every fertilized egg makes it to a woman's uterus and is flushed out in those delightful few days she has, every woman who has had more than one period is a serial killer.

Why are you looking for more protein? What makes you think you have a protein deficiency?

Studies show that for someone with a diet of near zero cholesterol, one egg will raise cholesterol by a lot. With a normal diet, it will not make a difference since the more cholesterol you eat, the less the liver produces. Most of your cholesterol comes from your liver. That is why a vegan does not need any in his diet. Vegans can have cholesterol levels of 115. |
