Default Is it your metabolism

I've seen many articles that people will habitually underestimate the amount of food they eat and overestimate the quality of the food they eat without realizing it.

If this sounds nuts to you, keep a food diary for a week. You will be blown away as I was. You might be especially surprised how many calories are in bagels, fruit juice, and pasta.

This article on the BBC illustrates this point:
BBC - Science & Nature - Metabolism and Weight

I also like this site that has pictures of what 200 calories looks like in various servings of food. Be sure to click on the picture to see the size of the serving in perspective:

What Does 200 Calories Look Like?

Mhh, dismissing a myth based on an experiment with 2 persons? ;< I probably eat a tad bit more than the average human. Yet for the past 2 years, I have barely gained weight, if at all any. If any, it just came from heavier bones due to growth. Not from the food. Lead a sedentary life till a few months ago. Went from sedentary to moderately active. Result: Still same weight. Didn't lose anything, didn't gain anything. I hate my body at times....

I blame my BMR.

Our liver can only store limited amount of sugar/glucose as glycogen, once it's overloaded, any excess would be easily converted into fat with the help of insulin. This is the reason why those who eat the most cake or sugary products (especially at their 30s when "MBR" or physical activity goes down), also tend to be at risk of obesity and other chronic diseases like diabetes.

Quote:
A new study in mice suggests that sugary drinks contribute to liver damage. For the research, German scientists either gave mice sugar-sweetened water or water containing an artificial sweetner. They found that mice with the sugar water ate less but still gained more weight and also suffered from "fatty liver."
Orlando Sentinel - Sugar linked to liver problems by Robyn Shelton

Poor mice, How many more studies we need to confirm that refined sugar is bad ?

I wrote in my original post that over the years I have come across a number of articles with full fledged studies showing as much.

Default Another vote for metabolic typing

Another thumbs up for Mercola's metabolic typing; it gives one a great base from which to build a healthy diet based on one's individual biochemical makeup.

Good rule of thumb : beware of doctors selling things, particularly things the medical community believes not to work.

In general, cron, I think that's a really good rule of thumb. In my experience, though, the medical establishment is often one step behind in what's best for optimal health due to their lack of education in that department, the reliance of pharmaceuticals as a first line treatment, and the overwhelming amount of research that is funded by large corporations including pharma, food and chemical multinationals. Given that the medical establishments advice is often lagging, we have to be our own advocates, and research what else it out there. Just food for thought-
