I've noticed that a lot of the long-term raw foodists look their age or even older. I am all about raw food and I see a lot of short term raw foodists that look great, but some long-term raw foodists like Viktoras Kulvinskas look really old. Does anyone know of any long-term raw fooders that look good? And why do some of these people end up aging so badly on the diet?

It probably has something to do with the amount of sugar consumed, and lack of needed amino acids to repair tissue. In the short term it will make one healthier, because of the added fruits, and veggies, and detoxification from healthier food. In the long run perhaps they become deficient of certain building blocks. Of course some out there will be fine long term, but I have noticed the same as you.

I believe Viktoras was known for binge eating and other eating disorders throughout most of his life and only fixed up around 10 years ago. This is heresay, though. If you do internet research, something might come up. |

I've seen plenty of long-term raw foodists that look great and young-looking. Health involves many factors other than what you eat. Also, sometimes the damage that was done when they were younger (sun, illness, junk food, alcohol, drugs), may make them appear older even if they're perfectly healthy now. | My hippie uncle says Viktoras had been promoting the raw food diet for at least 30 years, and always maintained that he himself (Viktoras) was on that kind of diet and pretty disciplined about it. (But I have no idea if he was faultless on it.)

Mimi's been vegan for 40 years. The long-term vegetarian man interviewing her looks good too. I've met a lot of women that look young for their age and all follow very healthy vegan diets, usually all or mostly raw. They all have great skin and very fit bodies. |

Raw-foodists have less fat and water retention, leaving the skin to hang more, instead of stretching out the wrinkles. I went vegan and 50% raw in 1994. I haven't "aged" at all. I went 100% 811 3 months ago. I now look better! It's strange that people think raw is a negative since you get more from the food(including Amino acids/protein) and the body isn't worn out dealing with cooked food. |

I signed up just to post here. For those looking to Mimi Kirk as an example of what a long-term raw foodist looks like, you should know that's she only been doing raw food for about 1 1/2 years, which is quite short-term considering her age. And, from the few articles/videos I've seen, she has not been vegan for 40 years - just vegetarian. Raw food is great, but it's not necessary for great health, and you do miss out on some power foods like beans and legumes, which are very high in antioxidants and protein. I try to eat beans every day. If you're on the fence about going all raw, check out this article by Dr. Joel Fuhrman, the most advanced doctor on the planet as far as I'm concerned! The Cold Truth About Raw Food Diets Raw foodists miss out on a lot of healthy veggies that are inedible unless cooked, and some foods, like tomatoes, are actually more beneficial once cooked. A lot of raw foodists end up eating way too many nuts and seeds as well. These should be part of a daily diet, but veggies should be the bulk of one's diet - not nuts and seeds. And plus, who really wants to give up cooked foods forever? I love a warm, nourishing, vegetable soup on a cold winter's night. Last edited by HappyUSGirl; 09-12-2009 at 08:54 PM. |

Personally, I don't think I could eat raw food all the time, but I am making a point to eat some every single day. I still need to eat some of my food cooked. I really don't think it would have a negative impact on aging though. Some people are just genetically lucky/unlucky. |
