It sounds like Nigerian superstitious and ignorant politicians are at fault. Did you read the whole article? With polio vaccine, it's all or nothing. You can't partially vaccinate your population and then decide halfway through the "West is trying to sterilize your kids and give you AIDS" and stop halfway through. Which is what they did. According to an ABC News article from 2004 called "Vaccine Boycott Grows in Northern Nigeria": "The Associated Press obtained a copy of the committee's interim report that ruled the vaccines safe. However, it acknowledged the tests showed "trace amounts of estradiol," a form of the female hormone estrogen the vaccine's Muslim detractors claim could cause infertility." The company denied any wrongdoing. A U.S. court dismissed a lawsuit by 20 disabled Nigerians who allegedly took part in the study, but a U.S. appeals court later revived it."This article has details about the case, in which drugmaker Pfizer reached a $75M dollar settlement with a Nigerian state over 1996 drug trials that led to the deaths of 11 children: "Eleven children died after taking Trovan, which is also alleged to have caused deformities including blindness, deafness, brain damage and paralysis in 189 others."

Interestingly, the original article claims that "For years, myths have abounded about vaccines — that they were the Western world's plan to sterilize Africans or give them AIDS."How can we blame them for being wary when the polio vaccines contained estradiol, even if it was trace amounts that probably came from the calf blood serum that's used to make the vaccine? *shudder* On another note, the original ABC News article about the hormone-contaminated polio vaccine is no longer available on its web site. I guess they're hoping Westerners won't remember why the Nigerians objected to vaccines in the first place; it seems like they want to reinforce our white prejudice about backwards and superstitious Africans. Similar to what happens to news in the book 1984, uncomfortable, inconvenient information gets scrubbed from the Internet. |

Vaccines have prevented so much polio outbreaks that even if this case was truly completely caused by vaccines, it would be, by far a justified risk. Nevertheless it was indeed because of moronic, supersticious politicians. (Regardless of any attempt to drive the attention away from this). The cause for this outbreak was actually vaccine fear mongering, not unlike what we have seen in these forums. This sort of fearmongering that is based on irrational fears to science, often backed by quite evil agendas like these nationalist, religious zealots. Or the million dollar industries dedicated to 'curing' autism. Or the million dollar supplement and alternative-medicine industries. Or the so-called doctors that have failed in real medicine and thus can only survive giving speeches about how their broken science, confirms the fears of some people. All of this backed by mainstream media personalities like Oprah and even movie stars. ... Quote:

The human body may make estradiol, but I can see why people balk at injecting themselves with vaccines made with calf blood parts (and porcine gelatin, chick kidney cells, African green monkey kidney tissue, etc., etc.). Here's a link to the CDC's pdf file of vaccine excipients: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/pin...nt-table-1.pdf

I think there may be something genocidal about the vaccine manufactroversy, and it is that the fear mongering seems to have the objective of making some racial groups avoid vaccines, the obvious result is that it is these racial groups that get the deaths later due to the non-working herd immunity, as shown by this clear example.

"Some people with severe allergic reactions to gelatin have a history of allergies to foods that contain gelatin. This is explained, in part, by similarities between the bovine gelatin contained in many foods and the porcine gelatin contained in vaccines. Therefore, it would be of value to know about possible allergies to gelatin before getting a vaccine that contains gelatin. People with severe allergies to gelatin should avoid gelatin-containing vaccines." Gelatin Allergies : Vaccine Education Center - Children's Hospital of PhiladelphiaAccording to the vaccine excipient table, about 16 vaccines have them, including the popular ones for kids like DTaP, Hepatitis B, Gardasil, etc. So what's the alternative for those kids who are sensitive? If they only see allopathic doctors, I guess they're fated to get sick and/or die, since vaccines are the only trick these "health" care providers have in their bag. And the ones that contain cow "parts" are not from cows that are tested for Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE); the CDC merely assures us it comes from countries that have no mad cow disease.

"Nigeria and most other poor nations use an oral polio vaccine because it's cheaper"A county using a cheapo vaccine and getting bad results is not proof all vaccinations are evil. They're cutting corners and providing a live, oral form of the pathogen knowing a few kids per million will come down with polio. Normally polio is injected and is a KILLED vaccine. I guess I'm just a "vaccine lover" because I like that I grew up without suffering polio and smallpox. Maybe the government has brainwashed my immune system through radio waves sent from spy satellites and none of us ever need vaccines? Where is that tin-foil hat of mine...?

Ok, as long as Nigerians never come to the US, God forbid. Because our water contains so much estradiol that they'd be instantly sterilized here. Interestingly, we don't seem to be suffering from that peculiar affliction even though we drink our water constantly. So rather than BE intelligent and proactive, even just a few Nigerians that may be in charge of maybe the health ministry, they allow silliness to prevail. Now their kids are paralyzed. There is just no helping some people. What can you say? This is not 1832. This is the new millennium. Two thousand nine. The world is no longer full of haves and have-nots. It is literally full of haves and choose-not-to-haves by making stupid decisions. Jennifer |

Scarily enough, people wish to maintain such illogical stereotypes, look at your average news program, television program, or movie. The same tired stereotypes are churned out on a daily basis. Yet the only think needed to completely circumvent this is merely to develop an iota of curiosity and do a cursory Google search.

| *Shrug* Apparently; more than you are an animal rights advocate. I'm surprised that someone who is so passionate about that issue and veg*nism has no qualms injecting animal "parts" into herself from the very same ones that she objects to being killed and eaten.

It makes me wonder if they were lied to about the ingredients in the drugs and vaccines, and so were shocked when they discovered what was in them. As most reasonable people ought to be.

Now, you can give third world countries all of these vaccinations and that *may* lower their disease. But that only covers up the cause of the problem. That is like if you have a horrible diet and you take drugs to cover up the effect of it. And I think your reference to the tin foil hats was implying that those who do not take vaccines are quacks. Which I think is very stereotypical and a misrepresentation of people who have enlightened themselves with all of the facts, not just assumed that vaccines have been responsible for reduction of disease. While vaccination companies make billions from providing vaccinations to sick people who do not have very good health, usually from a bad diet, which is most of the population.

And this type of name-calling is an effective way to scare those who are on the fence about controversial issues—if they haven't researched them very much, they may stick to believing the conventional mainstream information because they're afraid of being called crazy or worse. Which is why it's extremely important to find like-minded people who share your concerns and values. That's where the Internet comes in handy. There's a ton of groups to join, like the Vaccinations Yahoo group. Quote:

According to vaccine researcher Janine Roberts, polio is now called different names like viral or aseptic meningitis, Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP), etc. From "Polio: the virus and the vaccine" originally published in The Ecologist; full text available here. Prior to 1958 the definition of infantile paralysis (polio) included cases in which paralysis was minimal: perhaps manifesting itself as a very stiff neck, often accompanied by widespread pain. Polio also included cases of `meningitis', or of inflammation of the membrane that protects the brain and spinal neurons. The CDC describes such cases as `serious but rarely fatal'.(22) Prior to 1958 these cases were scientifically referred to as `non-paralytic poliomyelitis', or polio for short. Henceforward, they would be reclassified. The Los Angeles County health authorities stated: `Most cases reported prior to July 1 1958 of non-paralytic poliomyelitis are now reported as viral or aseptic meningitis.'She also discusses the fate of vaccine researcher Dr. Bernice Eddy, who had discovered that the polio vaccine made with contaminated monkey kidneys caused cancerous tumors when injected into research animals. She was promptly fired. I just stumbled across a chapter from Roberts' book Fear of the Invisible called "WHO hides the continuing polio epidemic." Looks good! |
