Question Are any of these (spirulina, AFA algae, marine phytoplankton, etc) actually palatable

in a smoothie?

I got some kelp and tried to mix it with an avocado, but it turned it to slime and I couldn't eat it. I imagine that putting it in a smoothie would have the same effect, but am I wrong?

I'd like a green superfood powder that I could put in a smoothie that would not make me gag. Has anyone tried David Wolfe's 'Sun Is Shining' powder?

I can't enjoy a smoothie if it tastes like fish, lol

help!

What you are talking about is the taste of the sea. It is salty. So kelp is salty. But there is algae from fresh water that is not as salty like spirulina.

There are lots of green drinks that have been blended to taste good. See site above for more on that. They will contain large amounts of sprulina, chlorella and land greens like wheat grass and barley grass. These are known as superfoods since they are nutrient dense.

One greens drink (green powder) is Greens Minus. Just kidding. It is Greens+. They have it in a raw green powder. But here is what tastes great. First off sugar and milk are terrible for health. But chocolate (without that stuff) is great for health. David Wolfe says that chocolate (cocao) is the healthiest food you can eat.

So you can go to Whole Foods or Trader Joes and get Greens+ chocolate bars. They are raw greens drink in a bar. The greens from the spirulina goes great with the chocolate and these taste great. You will see that it is chocoalate covered but green on the inside. The green in foods comes from plant blood-- chlorophyll. This webpage has many of the greens drinks including the bars.

As far as kelp, do not buy the powder. It is like dust. Buy the granulated kelp that is like the consistency of salt. Salt is not a food. Use the salty kelp instead of salt and sprinkle on your food. Unlike salt that is a rock like eating granite, kelp is a food from the sea. It is loaded with much more trace elements than any land plant. Also it is a naturally salty food that comes from the sea.

Kelp tastes really good on it's own in whole form. If it's a powder or granules, add it to a salad or soup. Gives salads a great flavor. You can use it on tomato slices alone or with other spices. Chlorella is really the only one that I like the taste of out of all the green powders (not counting kelp because it's a seaweed). The others work best added to smoothies. If you make it correctly, you shouldn't even detect it. Bananas work well for this. Hemp butter or other butters are good too. You can also use fresh orange juice to down it as a shot. Avocado works pretty well with spirulina and others made as a dip or soup. On my recipe page, I give a couple of ideas for Vitamineral Green which is the same as David's powder, only cheaper.

I just simply deal with the taste, even if it makes me gag.

The taste of marine phytoplankton is completely undetected in this drink:

Refreshing Goji Berry Drink
½-1 cup Goji Berries
16-24oz Water
Soak in glass jar for 3 hr. min. Strain and squeeze water out well. Save berries for smoothie or recipe.

Could work in other juice too, though I haven't tried yet. Experiment by testing out a small bit of juice in a separate cup so you don't ruin the whole drink.

Thank you so much for all the great ideas! I will have to print out the posts and the links. I especially like the idea of trying cold water algae.. of course it wouldn't have that briny taste! Why didn't I think of that! I'm going to try the kelp sprinkled on tomatoes, too

Default spirulina smoothie

Try sweetened almond milk, banana, 2 raw eggs or protein powder, 1TB spirulina, cinnamon.

Spirulina and chlorella are too valuable not to eat every day. Just one tablespoon is like 3 good-sized servings of a dark green leafy vegetable - even better!
