Default Male Deodorant

Every time I go to buy a new one I see a huge variety, start checking and smelling each and then.. just end up buying axe since it's so heavily promoted here. I don't have a problem with buying an expensive one, but I don't seem to like any in particular and not sure which to choose..

What do you use?

I don't use deodorant, and I only use soap on my hands.

My husband uses AXE because I think AXE smells the best.

Other nice smells is Nivea. I dislike Sanex.

From an informal poll, it seems women are pretty split on Axe. I have a very attractive female friend who says that she loves the smell of Axe, and she's jealous that nice-smelling products for men are so cheap (compared to expensive perfumes).

Other women associate Axe with douche-bag guys who over-gel their hair and think they're too cool for school.

I use mostly anything so long as it is a deoderant but not an antiperspirant. Often go with the "natural" brands, although I'm not sure I see much difference in the ingredients. I am using up a bottle ("bottle? whatever roll-on is) of Tom's and on my way to Old Spice.

I heard that the aluminium in anti perspirant causes alzeimers.

I think there is also aluminium in some deodorants. I don't think it is too dangerous to use deodorant but if you want to be safe, wear it on your clothes not your skin. I personally would never use antipersperant because it is natural to perspire and blocking that from happening is likely negative, though I have no idea what the long term effects of that are.

I hate all those chemical deodorants. They smell cheap, unpleasant and way too strong. I prefer the natural scent of men which seems much sexier to me.

Agreed. Can't stand them.

My boyfriend steals my deodorant since it doesn't have a very 'gendered' smell: I use Lush's Aromaco solid deodorant. It's not tested on animals and works just fine.
I sometimes also use perfumed baby powder, it's fantastic on hot and moist days.

Also, in order to reduce your need for deodorants alltogether: shave or trim your armpit hairs. Seriously.

My boyfriend wear Lynxx - usually Instinct (smells like leather) or Temptation? (smells like chocolate and orange)...

I LOVE most of the Lynxx deoderants - those two suit him the best though.

my husband wears unscented Arrid XXXdry. It works well for him.
my brother wears axe phoenix - but that's because it goes well for his body chemistry. My husband could never wear axe phoenix, it would be awful for him.

If you don't like the fragrances of deodorants, you could always go with the unscented kind, so that it will keep you from stinking... but won't cover up your regular smell with something that is not compatible with your body chemistry.

I use Mitchum stick because it seems to work best.

It's an interesting debate, the one about going 'natural' and not using deodorants. My conclusion is that after about 24 hours I naturally stink, and I don't really want to.

Just like how your breath will get gross and your teeth will fall out if you don't use technologies like toothbrushes and floss, 'natural' is not always better.

Default Switching to Aluminium-Free

Seems like the medical jury is still out on this:

Deodorant and Cancer: Is There a Link -- RealAge Disease Prevention and Care

...I am switching anyway...maybe to one of the natural remedies listed.

Hate the chemical deodorants with their strong artificial odors. Some of them are so strong, they burn my nose. Men are supposed to smell like humans, not like fake plasticized musk. Be aware if you're covering up regular smells, you may be covering up pheromones as well.

I'd vote going with a nice daily shower. If you really really need something, I'd suggest a low scent deodorant.

Also be aware your body chemistry, health, and what you eat affects how you'll smell. If you've got chronic bad BO, address the cause instead of trying to cover it up with stronger chemical smells.

Deodorant is not exactly the best thing to put on your skin. Especially anti-perspirants as they have Aluminum in them, which is a toxic metal to human beings. Using regular soap and water under your armpits should be sufficient. If it isn't, there may be something wrong with your health.

I recently got the chocolate one, but looks like it has a stronger smell than the other two?

Gotta say their ad campaign is simply brilliant

There is a deodorant by Degree that smells like you just got out of the shower. Not overpowering, but it smells nice. I could care less about heavily scented deodorants.

I hate Axe. It smells terrible, especially when several teenagers are in the same hallway, thus mixing the odor.

As for aluminum, its very controversial. People have used deodorants and have not died because of aluminum poisoning and the connection between Alzheimer's is not proven. To be frank, if it was such a problem, wouldn't aluminum damage the brain instantaneously instead of over 50 years?

The only advantage of AXE is that once you use it, millions of attractive women come out of nowhere and throw themselves at you. The other deodorants just mask your natural manly scent.

I stopped using spray on deodorants and antiperspirants about a year or so ago and now use a crystal salt stick (I use this one. You can learn more about the crystal salt sticks and how they work here).

I haven't been super-active physically in the past year, but since I've used the salt stick, I've never really needed an actual deodorant (i.e. "de-odor-ant"--something with a scent), even though the crystal salt isn't scented.

What made me interested in ditching deodorant in the first place was that it seemed strange to me that we spray scented chemicals on our skin to mask odor. I'm not exactly sure why that seemed strange, but I felt there must be a better (or at least, more natural) way. (I like the saying "if you wouldn't put it in your mouth, don't put it on your skin." Your skin is super-absorbent, and your body is sort of like a giant fish tank of water, so it's not so good to add chemicals to the "tank" otherwise the "fish"--your cells--don't do so well. I'm not sure if I'd put a crystal salt stick in my mouth since I believe they contain a natural form of "alum"--I'm not exactly sure if alum is safe for consumption--but, apparently, this kind doesn't get absorbed through the skin, so it should be safe to use.)

That said, I saw Matt Monarch and Angela Stokes speaking about a natural deodorant a while ago on YouTube. It's the first natural deodorant I've seen--it comes in a powder form that's apparently really potent. Again, I don't have issues with odor, but if I did, I'd probably check it out (in addition to the salt stick I currently use).

I like that… not so much because I like the smell of men, heh, but because I resonate with the more natural, primal approach to living. The "clean and non-stinky" natural, primal approach, though.

I also use a crystal salt stick. It works great, and I've been using the same stick for about 3 years now. They last a long time. My wife has even started using it (after making fun of it, of course)
You can find them on Amazon: Crystal Deodorant or perhaps at your local stores.
