Default Scientists say we have 10 more years to act

on global warming.

Last warning: 10 years to save world - Sunday Times - Times Online

Quote:
THE world has just 10 years to reverse surging greenhouse gas emissions or risk runaway climate change that could make many parts of the planet uninhabitable.

The stark warning comes from scientists who are working on the final draft of a new report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

The report, due to be published this week, will draw together the work of thousands of scientists from around the world who have been studying changes in the world’s climate and predicting how they might accelerate.

They conclude that unless mankind rapidly stabilises greenhouse gas emissions and starts reducing them, it will have little chance of keeping global warming within manageable limits.

I wonder what the metrics are for the rapid stabilization and how achievable that actually is given the various factors (political, change management, available technology, money/power corruption etc.) that all play a factor into reducing such gases.

I doubt the threat is that imminent, because I learned from Freakonomics that people tend to exaggerate statistics when they are fighting for a cause. What I don't understand though, is why many people (especially conservatives) just choose to ignore global warming, even calling it a non-issue. Even if global warming was a complete hoax, becoming more environmentally conscious is not going to hurt anyone. Better to be safe then sorry.
