Hi, a lot of people I've seen now are saying we are much closer to herbivores than most people realise. Now I don't want this to become a discussion about human, herbivore and omnivore anatomy so try to keep the controversy minimum. Though I agree humans should be at least mostly herbivorous. The thing I want to know is, what would be the difference between eating 100 grams of mixed insects compared to eating 100 grams of beef? or other red meats, or even chicken and other birds. I have no doubt the insects would be much healthier(unless poison) and I believe humans naturally ate insects and only animals when there wasn't enough plants available to live off. The other thing is, with our long intestines and alkaline saliva and not so acidic stomach and all that we have that herbivores have, would eating insects be effected by this? or would they pass through like plants, especially if we only ate small amounts at a time? Maybe insects are a good source of B12? So you could be a natural herbivore appart from insects, and be fully sustained on all vitamins that you need without supplements. |

Probably a great deal. Have you ever tried to eat organic kale without washing it? Mine was absolutely full of bugs. I still have an aversion to eating insects, but I'm sure I can get over it as I did with swallowing raw eggs. We just need a guinea pig to test... |

Not sure what you're really asking but It really doesn't matter what foods you get your nutrients from. Nature didn't make it tricky to survive. Quote:
And I eat mostly organic. I rarely run into bugs.

Really? No bugs? I need to get some from your store. I had to stop buying. And I completely forgot that most cows these days aren't out grazing as they should be, but if they were, then they'd probably be catching plenty of bugs. |

Heart problems mostly, and the long list of them. I just want to know how different our system would treat bugs and insects than it would treat beef or chicken. Whether they are the same or different.

I highly doubt meat causes health problems, in fact i'm healthier for it. Bad nutrition along with other bad lifestyle choices cause health problems, and dis-ease. I believe insulin to be the culprit behind most every dis-ease. Trans fat, refined carbs, excess sugar in any form, artificial man made additives, antibiotics, hormones, and the like cause problems. A diet of whole, natural foods does not lead to disease. I believe insects to be highly nutritious. A diet of fresh meats, fish, eggs, fruits, veggies, nuts & seeds, along with proper exercise, rest, and happiness lead to health.

I don't want to argue that meat is healthy or unhealthy, I just want to know if insects are meat like beef or chicken is meat, and if a herbivorous digestive system is negatively effected by instects like it would be from chicken or beef.

The thing with protein is they are just amino acids. Once they break down it doesn't matter where they come from. Plants, beef, bugs, whey shakes etc. It says on the back of my shake tub that it has an excellent amino acid profile but i have a sneaking suspicion thats marketing hooey. Plenty of people eat bugs, it's taught as a survival technique for special forces and those guys are tough. If it was adversely affecting their operational ability I doubt they'd be taught it. If it's good enough for the british SAS I'm sure it's good enough for you
