Default Question about starting uberman

I've been reading a lot about polyphasic sleep and in about 2 weeks I think I am going to start it because I will have 3 weeks free until school starts again.

I was going to try everyman and try and make that fit in with school, but I figured it would probably be better to do uberman for 2 and a half weeks or so, and then go back to monophasic right before school so that I can see what it is like and if I want to try polyphasic sleep again sometime it will be easier to adjust. I know I might not get the full effects of it in 2 and a half weeks, but I still want to try.

Anyway my current question is about how to start uberman. From the logs I read it seems that people just start trying to nap during the uberman hours after getting up from a full night of sleep and usually don't end up getting any sleep during those naps at the beginning. I was wondering if skipping an entire night of sleep and then starting the naps the next day would cause a quicker transition because, I'm not sure on this, but don't you go into REM immediately after you fall asleep if you have skipped a night of sleep and are sleep deprived?

So instead of slowly depriving yourself of sleep with the naps that don't yet get you in REM you could just get sleep deprivation started early.

Any opinions on whether it would work or not or if it has been done before would be appreciated.

Tried it, I tried to stay up the full night then start napping when I thought was necessary. It is not as successful as you imagine but it is one way of diving in to it quickly. Actually, when I tried it I think I ended up sleeping 3 hours instead of no sleep, so I wasn't dead the next day but tired enough to sleep. Even if you sleep fully the first night, then try to nap at mid day that same day, and you don't get to sleep, you'll train yourself to nap at that time. Once you start napping, don't skip a nap even if you think you can make it until you are adjusted of course. Lying down for 20 minutes with no sleep is better than skipping entirely.

I tried this when I was 14, and you sound pretty young too. I was only partially successful but if you are under 18, expect some stress from your parents as most people will be worried about you quartering your sleep.

It's really important to first master the skill of getting up as soon as your alarm goes off.

I tried uberman a little over a month ago and failed because I kept oversleeping. (There's not much motivation to get up when everyone else is sleeping and it's dark.) I know I'll try again soon, but I'm probably going to become an early riser first.

For me it's more the skill of falling asleep quickly! My main problem with polyphasic sleeping was that I can't fall asleep in the 20/30 minutes I set my timer to.
