Default Study: Eating meat makes you smell less attractive

For those of you who like studies, here's one that tested body odor while on a meat-eating vs. nonmeat diet:
The Effect of Meat Consumption on Body Odor Attractiveness -- Havlicek and Lenochova 31 (8): 747 -- Chemical Senses

The conclusion:

Quote:
Results of repeated measures analysis of variance showed that the odor of donors when on the nonmeat diet was judged as significantly more attractive, more pleasant, and less intense.
Now who can come up with the best follow-up joke to this?

THE ANTI-CANCER DIET

Quote:
Eat the right fat. Eating the wrong kinds of fat may be even more cancer-causing than eating too much fat. Cancer researchers became aware of this fat fact when they noticed that the incidence of most cancers is less in some cultures who actually have a high-fat diet, such as Eskimos (who eat a lot of seafood rich in omega 3 fatty acids) and the Mediterranean diet (which is plant-based, but high in monounsaturated oils). Some fats don't contribute to cancer and may in fact have some anticancer properties:

Unsaturated fats, found in plant foods, such as legumes

Vegetable oils that are high in monounsaturated fats, such as olive (Greek women who tend to eat a diet rich in olive oil have a very low incidence of breast cancer) and canola oil. A 1998 study showed that men who eat less animal fat and more vegetable fat in their diets had less prostate cancer.

Seafood, such as salmon and tuna, that is high in omega 3 fatty acids

Oils that contain more omega 3 than omega 6 fatty acids, such as flaxseed, pumpkin seed, canola, soybean (not hydrogenated), walnut, safflower, sunflower, sesame, and virgin olive oils. (Heating vegetable oils at high temperatures can change fatty acids and make them carcinogenic. Peanut oil and extra virgin olive oil stand up best to cooking, but try not to boil them. It helps to keep stirring stirfrys so the oil doesn't get burnt.)

People on the meat-heavy Atkins diet sure stink to high heaven! I understand that's a particular to ketosis, and does not apply to all meat-eaters.

Danger Man's a carnivore, and he smells like meat in a good way.

I had a vegan boyfriend who smelled kinda funny, but I think that might have been all of his herby-essency-smoky products that he'd been holding onto since the '60's. I had to kick him to the curb when he sprinkled yeast on the spaghetti I served him.

Steve and Erin, I'm sure you smell deeelicious!

Steve, the KIND OF MEAT IS THE PROBLEM not meat itself. Did the study use organic, grass-fed beef? Most likely not. However, I noticed that same with me if I dont choose my meat wisely. In fact, I have gotten to love lamb and buffalo and less red meat and chix. Also, I have problems eating normal eggs and even natural eggs but if I eat omega 3, organic eggs, I have no allergic reactions.

I think the study of cognitive function degradation due to Stearic acid found in Beef, mutton, pork and etc is compelling

That's y a clean fish still remains the best meat choice for those who are omnivorous.

Quote:
Their study involved 246 men and women (aged 63 to 74 years) who had the lipid (fatty acid) composition of their erythrocytes analyzed in 1995. All participants also underwent tests to determine their cognitive function at baseline and after a 4-year follow-up period. The researchers found that study participants with high erythrocyte levels of stearic acid (a saturated fatty acid) had a 91% higher risk of having experienced a significant decline in cognitive function over the 4 years than did participants with average levels. Participants with high levels of linoleic acid (an unsaturated omega-6 acid) had a 59% increased risk of decline while those with high levels of EPA and DHA had a 41% lower risk of experiencing cognitive decline than did those with normal levels.

The researchers suggest that the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and especially DHA help keep the membranes of brain cells more fluid while saturated and omega-6 fatty acids tend to "harden" them. They believe this and the anti-inflammatory effects of EPA and DHA are what help preserve cognitive function.
Heude, Barbara, et al. Cognitive decline and fatty acid composition of erythrocyte membranes – The EVA Study. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol. 77, April 2003, pp. 803-08

Editor's comment: Stearic acid is found in high quantities in beef, mutton, and pork while omega-6 fatty acids are abundant in vegetables oils such as safflower, sunflower, and soybean oil. The long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) are found in fatty fish and fish oils.

I think I read a study that said cannibals prefer to eat vegetarians because we taste better. I'm definitely putting that on a resume. "I taste better."

Erin, thanks for my SECOND good laugh of the day -- I pictured you sitting primly at a cannibal's desk, in your power suit, being interviewed by Mr. CEO Cannibal; you're earnestly convincing him of the benefits he'll get from eating you.

Have you ever noticed it's practically impossible to have a great romantic relationship with someone if you don't love the way they smell? I think amour is 50% smell. She said, shamelessly changing the subject.

I would have to go ahead and agree with you because meat decomposes in your body while veggies and fruits pass through very quickly. So yes, meat eaters have to smell worse, especially ones who only eat meat and neglect vegetables and fruits/nuts.

Sorry John, according to Maddox, "acceptable fragrances for men are: sweat, grease, rum, or some combination thereof." (Source)

What's the solution?

Become a pirate-like, rum drinking car mechanic and go work on engines all day in a hot shed. That'll fix you right up.

Actually, pretty soon Steve and I will both be employees of Pavlina LLC. I hope they have a good benefits package. I hear they're pretty stingy with giving employees time off.

Actually talking about smelling and tasting and eating other people, I've had this question for a while...

Is it unacceptable for hard-core vegans to consume something of another human, bodily fluids for example. Would there be no kisses for über-vegans? Or are they dry as Sahara?
