Hi All I have been out of the gym for several years (since I was 18 actually) and I have decided the time has come to get back to it! The problem is that I have no idea how to break myself back in. Anyone have a clue? Regards GC |

It cost money but maybe a personal trainer at the gym you choose might be a good investment. A knowledgable personal trainer will know how to start you off. And usually you don't need to hire them every time you go to the gym. Just need a few sessions and you can be off on your own. A thought, if you are doing weights or any strength training make sure to go very light or don't use any weight at first just do the motions. I hurt my triceps a few years ago assuming I could still lift heavy after a two month lay off. |

If you haven't worked out in a long while then you don't need a gym. You need to start with bodyweight training, and sprinting which is all free. Eventually you could get a pull up bar, and some dumbells, after that you are set. Some of the most fit people in the world don't workout in gyms, they do it at home, and outside. I'm sprinting at the mountain out in the sun, and fresh air everyday, and 3 days a week i'm at home busting out pushups, dips, pullups, and exercises I can do with my dumbells. Believe me a 60 pound dumbell in each hand can do a damn good job at pumping those shoulders. I think it's funny seeing people go to a gym to do bench presses, when those same people when asked to do 50 pushups can't breakout 25. I'm not saying you can't get a good workout at the gym, i'm just saying you don't need it, and infact if you haven't mastered the weight of your own body then the gym is not really that logical. For a couple hundred bucks you could get a few sets of dumbells in different weights, a pull up bar, push up bars, and some running shoes.

Just take it easy to begin with and build yourself up gradually. Ask your gym trainer for a set of exercises you can do for a few weeks. From there you can do what you want and mix it up a bit. The beauty of a gym is the variety of weight and machines. I do it at home and the gym. |
