Did you know that medications kill over 100,000 annually in the U.S.? That's right. And the influenza virus kills about 36,000 in the US every year.

I really don't get all the panic around this thing. It's pathetic, really

About three months ago, I heard that the Mexican govt. is keeping the price of food from rising because the people were close to food riots. Their economy is devastated already. Either this flu is much worse than they are reporting ( a doctor there at one hospital reported 3 - 4 deaths daily from this since 3 weeks ago - you do the math.)

Or the govt. wants people to focus on something else other than the economy.

The first person on U.S soil (a 22 month year old boy) died today in the morning somewhere in Texas of swine flu. It was reported that he had gone to Mexico with his family causing him to get infected, leading to his death.

I agree with all of you that people shouldn't really panic about things like this and that to some extent vaccines are really just a business, that's effective in perpetuating itself. Watching the news it's all the they talk about. Both English and Spanish networks, brainwashing all parts of the population.

I seriously cannot bear to watch the news anytime because of its constant negativity and brainwashing, but this has gotten unbearable. About the virus being human-made, I understand why this could be true, but these kinds of things have seriously gotten out of hand.

I'm not yet convinced it's man-made, not until I see some hard evidence, rather than speculation. As far as DNA and RNA makeup are concerned, viruses swap DNA naturally all the time, and it's not hard to see different strains of flu virus coming into contact with one another --- we live in a world where global tavel is common, and viruses travel with their human hosts. It's one of the very real dangers of the modern world: global pandemic and adaptation of pathogens to new populations and environments.

So far, Swine flu is highly transmissible, but not highly lethal (at least not when compared to the real horrors: Ebola, smallpox, Avian Flu, Spanish Flu, HIV, etc.). Of course, if enough people catch it, it will kill a lot of people, but you've probably got a higher risk of dying in a car accident than dying by Swine flu.

How do you know?

If you take 1600 suspected cases for 160 deaths with was the number gingko posted above that's a death rate of ten percent. Of course the real number is probably lower since deaths a more likely to be discovered it still doesn't seem not highly lethal to me.

Yes it's nothing that's 100% sure but on the other hand I don't think that a man-made virus would necessarily show much hard evidence.

The economy suffers if people don't want to go into masses of people and rather stay at home because they fear to get ill.
And sooner or later the swine flu is over anyway. It would be dumb for a government to do such a thing.

There no reason why a virus like that shouldn't come back (or for that matter the exact virus which you can download freely on the internet)
True. It could happen. But there's really no reason to assume, in advance, that the pig flu virus will be so deadly. After all, the chicken flu virus wasn't.

Besides, panic is never a good idea, even when it is "justified". On the contrary: The worse the real situation is, the more important it is to stay calm.

Exclamation Feeling a bit tweaked

A few weeks back I received an audio from a friend in the National Health Federation (NHF) where a woman is reporting trucks transporting a potential "avian flu". I shared it with a few people that said to me "yeah so what, what am I supposed to do about it?" My response was "just remember what you heard and wait and see if anything comes of it."

Now this...................

Is it okay to post youtube links here? If anyone is interested in hearing it let me know.

I find it strange that I received this and then lo and behold here comes the swine flu! Of course if I mention it to most people I get the old "Do you really think our government would do such a thing?". I then promote self-education, thinking outside the box, sovereignty etc.............. Not much more we can do than stay educated, healthy and open minded!

Bless!

incentive? ask the drugs industry. Any pharmaceutical company with a vacune for it will make bilions.

Still I'm wondering what the synch means. It's a remark, that's for sure.

This is a very interesting discussion about the H1N1 virus.
The most intesting discussion I have encountered.

I tend to stay unmoved by such controversies while taking ordinary precautions.

Then I was listening to NPR and heard that 10s of 1000s of school children in huntsville, AL are home today. This actually had an effect on me. My young son was scheduled to drive several hours with his 2nd grade class to see butterflies in Huntsville today. We arrived at school this morning to learn the trip was cancelled. Apparently 2 kindergarteners were ill with flu like symptoms yesterday.

Regardless of the actual danger, such swift action will help limit the severity. My day to day life will not be altered but I will refrain from putting my hands on my face or in my mouth and will wash my hands regularly - at a minimum.

I can understand where bman is coming from. Most people don't want to think outside the box and just accept whatever information we get from news etc, without question.

I heard the audio that Leighlon mentioned. It is scary stuff. A couple of days ago, one of my nursing classmates says, "I turned on the news this morning and all they talked about was the swine flu - I don't understand it." Now this is a 27 year old woman. I wanted to say, "honey you're going to be getting it soon, or working with it." Most people I come into contact with have NO CLUE what goes on in the world today. And these are supposedly "educated" people.

But then there is a beast called integrity. You have to trust other people to do their job right. You do not hit the books after you went to the doctor to find out wether his diagnosis was right. You do not study landscaping after someone cuts your grass to make sure that they did a good job. I am sure you get my point. Most of us are doing the right thing by trusting other people to do their job. So we expect, naturally, for news cast to deliver the news, not bloated-truth-stretched "facts".
And as far as I am concerned, you can complain all you want, but CNN is still there only because people keep watching it.

Why shouldn't they transport a potential "avian flu"?
US research labs which want to research what they can do against avian flu need to have the viruses to do their research.

Their multiple biosafety four labs in the US and they aren't secretive at all.

You don't have to either assume that something is deadly or assume that it isn't but you can act based on risk.
